    Hi all,

I just heard from 123.ie that they won't insure car I bought recently because it is a japanese import. They told me to cancel my policy and move to another company.

It is a 99 toyota vitz 1.0 auto so not a performance car but looks like insurance companies doesn't wanna hear details of the car even.

I appreciate if you can name insurers/brokers who insures japanese imports without hassle or huge premiums to prioritize the list to call today.

    Thanks !

my broker insured my old 1.5 'performance' vitz fine, when i was 20 with 3 years NCB for 800 euro.

i'm not saying do it, but whats to stop you telling them its a yaris and putting a yaris badge on the back? otherwise as you say the cars are identical... unless of course your was like mine and didn't have an immobiliser key.

I think it is easy to prove that it is an import in case of a claim from insurer's perspective. I never saw an irish 1.0 automatic(torque converter) yaris from that era.

I am 31 with 3 years ncb so I expect to find a reasonable quote from some company which just doesn't scare of word "japan" :D

    Update:
Looks like axa and zurich insurance insures japanese imports reasonably. All brokers gave me quotes from these companies.

I got quotes from 520E to 580E for a fully protected ncb comprehensive cover with breakdown assist. driving other cars, windscreen cover, etc.

3 years NCB+named driver with provisional license+ both over 30.

    AXA deffo cover Jap imports.

Zurich no longer cover jap imports for new business. That's what I was told when my policy lapsed with them & I tried to reinsure. (June 11)

I think the issue is the ease of stealing these cars caused by lack of immobiliser as standard, it's possible if you fit an aftermarket one they may then cover you. 123.ie are brokers underwritten by RSA so it's likely the rules have come from there.

It's only with new policies not covering Jap...renewals are fine...Have you taken out a brand new policy in the last 3 months on it?

Not what I was told, they told me they will not insure jap imports. Well unless they have started very recently.

My mother has the exact same car, 99 Vitz 1.0, has it insured for herself and myself with Quinn, rather cheaply and no bother at all!

I am 99% sure it is, the ease to steal the cars is frightening, they are basically rub a few wires together jobs, a child could do it. Once a thief sees a Jap import they know it's theres for the taking, like in the way they target cars pre 96.

I have my jap Surf insured with AXA through O'Sullivans in Galway. Used to have it with Aviva through Gogans in Dublin.

    Try Setanta, too.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I ended up with axa via chill.ie for 525E. Fair price I think.

Axa directly have always covered japs & I took a brand new policy out last month going into the AXA office in Sligo. Unless that has changed since last month.
