Appealing driving test result

    Hi all, i've been driving for 10 years and have held a full license for 9 years, but having moved to australia 3 years ago, i had to transfer to a Victorian drivers license. having passed the knowledge test and hazard perception test easily, i did my drive test yesterday. i had an exceptionally smooth run, prbly the safest drive i've ever done in my 10 years of driving. the examiner was happy with the test and i was quite pleased with myself, but after 15 mins in the waiting room i was called back n told i failed coz i "didnt check my mirrors enough everytime i turned, and didnt do enough headchecks".
    i was told i had no other faults, but i had 24 negative ticks, and i had to get less than 20 negatives to pass... BUT all that 24 ticks were about not checking mirrors. i mean, even if i DIDNT check mirrors. shudnt that be ONE negative out of all the other judging criteria?
    anyway, i was shocked, as like i said, i thought i followed everything to the dot. and everytime i turned, i DID check my mirrors, and there was never a car in sight everytime i made the turn. BUT, i didnt make a huge play acting turn of the head everytime i checked mirrors, i've been doing this long enough to just lift my eyes up or to the side to check my mirrors, you know what i mean? so my questions are;
    (1) do you think because i didnt make a huge gesture of turning my head up or down or to the side when checkin mirrors, she thought i actually didnt check them?
    (2) even if this was TRUE, should i be failed on ONE negative when the rest of the test, in her own admission, was spotless?
    (3) i dont know what to do, i accepted her verdict politely and didnt argue, and booked another date - which is 5 weeks from now, and too late for me cos my overseas license priviledges expire before that. should i go see if there's anyone i can talk to about it at the Vicroads centre?
    ~~~if anyone can shed some light, please do. thanks heaps.
    Ashan.
    Well, this is an Irish website and usually deals with the Irish Driving test, but assuming they work on the same principle:
    You don't only get one negative mark for not checking mirrors. In the Irish driving test, you'd get one for every time it happened, and I assume it's something similar with yours!
    Not checking mirrors enough while turning is a common enough fault. For example, if you are approaching a right turn, the sequence of events would be something like this:
    Check rear view and right wing mirrors (see what's behind you, is there anything likely to overtake, etc.) and signal if necessary.
    Move into position for a right turn (if you have to move road position into a right turn lane, a brief glance at your right blindspot is recommended, just in case a car has moved in early).
    Adjust your speed to take the turn, then select an appropriate gear.
    You should check your mirrors again before turning as the information you assess changes. This is especially true if you need to stop to wait for a gap. Do not start to make the turn until you know what is behind you - you are on the lookout for bicycles or motorbikes that may be trying to overtake you. Look into the road you are about to turn into before you make the turn, in case traffic is blocked on it.
