What's the rules and regulations regarding 4 way stop signs...

I know the general rule is to give to your right but lets just take the situation where 4 cars approach at the same time...

Well normally it's whichever car comes first that sets the whole 'give way to traffic on your right' thing in motion, but if four cars were to approach at the same time, it's a bit of a judgement call! Move out but do so slowly to let the other traffic know what you are about to do before you do it!

Always keep an eye on other traffic regardless of whether you have right or way or not, and remember traffic already on the junction has right of way!

But they're not that common, or at least not common in many places I've driven. It's much more common to see a crossroad with a main road (that has right of way) with the two side roads having a stop sign!

Now, I never seen this in Ireland but seen it quite a lot in the US so can only speak from experience from there.
Usually it's first come, first served.

If there is doubt it's usually the biggest/most aggressive car that goes first - or the car on the largest/widest road.
This sounds stupid but that's how it works in reality. In my opinion.

well luckily enough I found myself at one this evening :L god trust it'd be the roads around my house that'd it'd happen

it's a really quiet backroads junction so the chances of meeting 4 cars are slim
    but ya never know...

As you've said you should give way to traffic on your right. It takes one driver to kick all this off and claim the junction as his/her own mwahahahaha :D

it'd be really bad luck to come to something like this in a busy town during your test wouldn't it... I think in the test you'd just wait on someone else to move on :p

That's honestly the first one of those I've ever seen

But it looks rural enough, so as you, I doubt there's an issue there.

Don't worry about being brought through one in a town on your test - in busy towns you won't see these, it'll either be regular crossroads (where one road has priority) or a crossroad controlled by traffic lights!

resurecting this thread after a wee break, but you do get a 4 way stop in some towns.

Manorhamilton in Leitrim for instance now has them <here> , but they arent visible on google maps unfortunately.

I came through there recently and was uterly baffled by it myself (more surprise at the use of it on a main national road), but recognised that driving a continental reg car and being on the main road gave me priority when the others couldn't make up their mind !

It seems I'm not the only one to be a little confused though.
Four stop signs causing confusion in Manorhamilton

Four stop signs at the N16 and Main Street junction in Manorhamilton is causing a lot of confusion with drivers locally.

At the September Council meeting, Cllr Siobhan McGloin asked that the Council to highlight the changes to the junction in the centre of Manorhamilton. Cllr McGloin said it is causing much “confusion” and there is an “accident waiting to happen.” Cllr Sean McSharry agreed there is concern over the four sets of stop signs at the one junction.<snip>

Depends on the situation, generally the rule is give way to those on your right, you give way to those going straight on and those turning in the same way as you whether they coming from the left/right and positioned straight/opposite ahead of you.

Its a junction, you treat it like you would be at traffic lights/those at a junction/crossroad/junction with box junction.

There is a page in the rules of the road specific to this regarding who to give way.
