Iphone recognised on itunes but unable to update music

Hi, Expert knowladge requested....my iphone when connected to itunes appears in the devices column and i can download photos, read music contained on the iphone, it will even download new voice recordings that have been made from the phone to itunes folder. However I can not add any apps or new music from the itunes libary…

Hi,

Expert knowladge requested....my iphone when connected to itunes appears in the devices column and i can download photos, read music contained on the iphone, it will even download new voice recordings that have been made from the phone to itunes folder.
However I can not add any apps or new music from the itunes libary back onto the iphone...when dragging items to drop I just get the crossed circle.

Any solutions greatfully appreciated...
