I'm only starting out and need help choosing between the felt f95 (garmin team colours) and the boardman road bike2011. Does the technical stuff matter to a novice like me? Just want to pick the right bike for such a big outlay

Which boardman road bike? How much are you willing to spend?

I have the Felt F95 in the Garmin Transitions colours and would highly recommend it. I have only one problem with it being the gap between the top of the back tire and the underside of the brake caliper is tiny and any buckle in the wheel will cause it. Other than the wheels it is a great bike for a starter.

    It's the race 2011 model. It's €800. That's about my limit

    just giving another option

Canyon make great frames and the SRAM apex would be a step up from the mix of Tiagra / Sora on the felt.

You can get this for 750 in Eurocycles on the longmile road. If you buy it through the cycle to work scheme, you'll get over 100 euro of free accessories. I bought one recently (1st bike) and love it. Looks great!

I am a total beginner. I bought a felt f95 three months ago, had no problems whatsoever with it.

I got an F95 last month and have ridden about 200km on it so far, including the 80km Barrow challenge. Compared to my old bike I just bloody love it in the hills. The only thing I might change is the saddle which I found a little uncomfortable after about 50km, but that's probably personal preference. It's a fast little bugger too.

Hi Serpico, I have the F95 and I love it.. its a perfect bike for starting off.. however, I have made some upgrades, ie. the brakes and deraileurs.. oh and also the wheels.. hmm.. kinda thinking I should have spent a little more for a better spec bike.. I love it now tho...!!!

Thinking of this model for a winter bike but I'm told the clearance might be too tight to fit mudguards. Any opinions here? I use Crudguards so I might have a bit of leeway

I have an f95 I bought 3 years ago. I love it and its looks, but looking back felt offer poor value for your money. I had it two months and I wanted a better drivetrain and spent 350 upgrading to ultegra sl. The boardman or canyon would offer higher spec for you money, the canyon being an outstanding starter bike without competition. If I had to buy a starter bike all over again it would be a no brainer.

Apex would be a massive step up. While the bike is sora / tiagra mix, it is effectively a sora bike, but with microshift shifter (which are poor). Even if it had a full tiagra drivetrain (shifters and all) apex would still be a step up as it on a level with 105 (the shimano level up from tiagra)

    In short: felt - good
canyon - a million times better.

Funky, just as a matter of interest, was the drivetrain upgrade worth it..?

Oh god yes. It was a full sora (tiagra rd) and the difference was massive. I just put all my old drivetrain on an old steel frame for a cx bike last week and it was not pleasant going back! 105 would also be a good upgrade if ultegra is out of reach, just make sure you get the right size for everything (front mech band, calipers drop, crank length) if you go.down that road.

Hard to beat the Felt in value for money if you're buying online. Over €300 cheaper than the Canyon.

    And a much lesser bike.

They aren't comparable at all. The canyon should be double the price of the felt for the spec it has. You can't just look at the price.
Did you look at the frame weight and quality. What about the finishing kit, what about the wheels, these all cost money and they are all alot better on the canyon.

The difference in the drivetrain alone is nearly worth it without even considering any of the above.

And if I could be arsed I'd find a link for a similar sepc bike for less that then felt in a few minutes, but I couldn't.

Never mentioned which is better or was looking to compare them but if you have €600 to spend you'd be hard pushed to find a bike specc'd better than the felt.

Bought one a couple of days ago and couldn't find one.

Really? How so? I had the microshift Arsis shifters and actually quite liked them. Holyboy, bike mechanic and shop owner, has also given microshift his endorsement.

    What's wrong with Microshift?

They had disastrous shifters out at some stage, Fuji had them on their bikes and replaced them all. The current ones seem to be completely different and are getting good reviews.

have done 300k over last few weeks. really nice bike, gears can cause a few teething problems. just get bike shop to re tune after a week or so. saddle is ok, micro shifters are ok. bike feels very fast and responsive. tyres are very dood quality.

Can the Canyons only be bought online, do any bike shops stock them?
