Can you boot successfully to Safe Mode (tap F8 before Windows begins to load) ? Does the laptop give a bluescreen message or just power off ? Any error messages at all ? Does Windows fail to load at the same point each time ? Have you unplugged any USB devices before booting ?

Thanks for posting a reply to me
It has taken me an hour and a half to get laptop started, i am afraid to restart it and try safe mode,i dont get a bluescreen message, the only USB devices that i have in are a mouse and my interned, which i always had plugged in.
When starting laptop it just hangs,so i turn it off and then it restarts and it bring me to restore and i try to restore it, in restore i got a message
"cannot repair computer (Start Up Repair 2) "and it asks will i send to microsoft or not, then i click on finish.
Eventually after a few time i get it running, when it starts i also get a waring that Nero home has stopped working.
    Have you any sugestions ??

    Windows Vista ?

Click Start orb and right-click Computer/Properties . How much Memory(RAM) is is installed ?

Click Start orb /Computer . How much free space on your hard drive ?

Have you an anti-virus program installed ? Having more than one running can cause the problems you are experiencing , so if you have two uninstal one of them .

There are a couple of things you can do as basic maintenance while still trying to pinpoint your problem . Click Start and type msconfig into the search bar . Run msconfig.exe and under Startup tab uncheck everything bar your antivirus and mobile broadband application . Click to Apply , then OK to exit . Changes made will not take effect til the laptop is restarted . Before restarting download and run Ccleaner to get rid of temp files etc . Now download , instal and allow MBAM to update . Dont instal any toolbars that may be offered with these , by the way . Run a scan so we know we're probably not dealing with malware etc . If MBAM finds anything allow it fix the selected items - it may want you to reboot to complete the removal of anything it finds . Restart whenever you're ready and let us know if there's any improvement and also the answer to the questions above .

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, if found the start up discs, restored LT(laptop) back to factory settings and deleted everything and it was working fine, then i tried to get the updates it will not down load 4 updates.
today i am back to the same as my 1st message , doing restores etc :(

Yes its Vista basic, 1 GB ram, and 100gb free on the hard drive, i am using AVG anti virus, i removed Nortons with the removal tool.

I did every thing that you told me to do, the test ran fine and all ok from them.

At this stage i am afraid to turn LT off as its so much hassel to get it started

My head is just wrecked now as to what it is and as in what to do, i no a fare bit about computers but this 1 has me
Would it be any thing to do with the updates etc

    Thanks

When you restored to factory settings did the laptop then boot normally ? If startup was as slow as before then it's most likely a hardware issue -try powering up the laptop with your USB mouse and broadband dongle disconnected ,also make sure there's no disc in CD tray . Once Windows loads you can plug them in .

If startup time was normal after the factory reset what changes were made before it deteriorated again ?

The updates that are hanging may be doing so because previously installed updates that they are dependent on need to be applied first by rebooting .
