Was wondering if it is at all possible to remove a floyd rose and replace it with a kahler (or any other fixed bridge/string thru variant) ?

here's an amazing thread over on HC about de-kahlering a vintage les paul

also remember that Gilmours strat has also been de-kahlered at some point

You can make a guitar with a floyd take another type of bride but you'll have to make alterations to the body by either changing the route or filling it in and drilling new holes for the new bridge. Depending on how much work you do you'll probably have to do a refinish to make it look decent again.
If you want to avoid using the floyd and be able to drop tune without much hassle you can just block off the trem. You can do this really easily by stuffing something in the cavity to stop the block from moving. You could also fit something like a tremol-no http://www.tremol-no.com/. This is a little device that lets you block the trem or use it normally when you want.

I agree a block of wood cut to shape or a tremelno is the way to go. Have a tremelno ready to go into a washburn just havent got the chance yet. The guy who developed it was on another forum i frequent and it is really cool. The best part is it can easily be unlocked for using the floyd if needed.
