A very knowledgeable man and totally nuts about golf.

    May he rest in peace.

Sad news. Remember when he commentated with BBC and you'd hear him cracking up in the background at Peter Alliss's jokes. Also remember in the early 90s he commentated with Screensport alongside Roddy Carr. As said above, very knowledgable and his love and ethusiasm for the game always shone through. R.I.P.

Great memories of his voice on BBC when I was younger. He used to do the Irish Open as well up until a few years ago if I remember right. RIP.

Sad if true. Checked the BBC site and no mention there. He was very knowledgeable and seemed to get the push from the BBC very quickly at the beginning of the 2000's or so I thought in favour of the younger presenter etc.

Very sad to hear this news.

I can still hear his voice in my head "..and what a lovely shot that was." RIP

    Me too.

Alex Hay and Peter Allis were my favourite commentary team by a mile.

    RIP.

Hay, Alliss, the Open, Faldo, Seve, the BBC theme tune. Magic stuff.

Same here. Not always the biggest fan of Peter Alliss but the two of them together were brilliant. Good memories of watching the golf as a kid.

He was a great commentator ,sorely missed.
You'd always hear Aliss making a joke and , Hay would be chuckling away in his unmistakable laugh in the background.

He was my favourite commentator, something about that Scottish burr and men chasing a small ball on a sunny afternoon that was hard to beat.

Yeah, their styles complimeted each other. Peter Alliss is great but I enjoyed him most when he was with Alex Hay. Hya brought out the best in Alliss.
