Airsoft guns are usually modelled on real weapons, the M4 is a very popular one to model it on, so lots of AEGs are "M4"s. There are then within that many, many variations which may or may not accurately portray variations within the actual M4/M16 series of weapons.

If you're looking to buy yourself a new AEG, the very best thing you can do is go into a shop and have a look at the stuff they've got on the wall and have a chat with the staff there. Mechanically, all airsoft guns are fairly similar internally, so the external feel is really important when it comes to choosing what you want. Get to a shop, pick stuff up, wave it around and figure out what feels good to you.

G&G are a good name to go for, they're known for high-quality and reliable internals. They're not very cheap though, especially if you want a metal body (their Raider series with the nylon-fibre bodies are very good value though). Find a shop selling them, go in and have a look.

Have a browse around the forum here (and there are plenty of other fora out there to check out) to see what kind of thing people recommend to new players and to find shop locations, there's lots of info already there just waiting to be read.

I reckon he means M16 too but there is a Ingram M6 that kinda looks like a Thompson, and there's an M6 lever action shotgun too.
(Dont think they are available in airsoft though!)

    okay wasnt too sure
anyway basically they are the same rifle just with varying barrel lengths and really it doesnt matter what it looks like, when looking for the better AEG you need to find the brand name.I hear SRC have nice m4s and m16s and from my experience with SRC they are quite good

There is the 6.whatever mm rechambered version of the m4 carbine some pmc types are rolling with... but in airsoft its identical.

    m4 vs m16?

m16 will be more accurate, with marginally longer range, due to the fact, its got a longer barrel.
