A mate wants a 4x4 that will go more or less anywhere. Living on the west coast so plenty of salty sea air. 5k-ish budget. Has to have 3 seats. Will have minimal road use - no long runs.

    Any suggestions ? A waxoyled Defender ?

I agree with your own suggestion although they can rust fine all by themselves without any help from the sea salt ;). The pickups seem to be the cheapest and they have 3 seats, not that many second hand ones for sale here though.
I would rather buy one that has'nt been waxoiled because it can hide all the rot from view when your making the deal. It might be better just to get one with a good clean chassie and waxoil it yourself then, its not a difficult job just a filthy one. If you can find one with a galvanised chassie for that money its the one to buy I doubt you will though unfortunately.
    Best of luck.

tell him to buy a welder and get practicing!

On a more serious note, a defender may well break his heart, they're worth it if you really like them, but they're a bit of a labour of love and most people who have landrovers have a love-hate relationship with them, particualrly the older ones, where they just wont let them die no matter how the damn things keep trying to.
