Rent Allowance Query

    Hi,

I'm looking for some info. I recently lost my job and money is very tight at the moment due to the fact that my partner is on maternity leave, I'm waiting to be paid from my job and have a few weeks wait before my meeting with the social welfare.

We're in the process of applying to be put on the social housing list but was told there is a wait of up to 12 weeks.

Can we apply for rent allowance while doing this? We really can't wait 12 weeks and then however long it takes to process the rent allowance after this.

With a newborn baby and both of us out of work I'm very worried. Is there anything I can do? Can I apply for rent allowance now?

    Thanks

yes you can apply for rent allowance and a top up of your wifes maternity payment until your payment comes through. if you apply for rent allowance now and are granted housing in a few weeks then it will be back dated. why not just apply anyway.

You won't get rent supplement whilst you are being assessed for social housing, it will only be backdated to the date of application for housing.

An alternative route is to be renting for 6 out of the last 12 months and be able to prove it to the CWO.

NB as the CWO makes you apply immediately then the two dates are often the same of course. Or as near as makes little difference.

They took nearly seven months to sort out the housing list applicaton for me, and I finally got the RA backdated all the way. Mind you that was when they realised that they should not have made me apply for the housing list anyway.

If you mean that it will be backdated to the date you are assessed, then that cannot be right or fair.
