So for the past while when my jeep is decreasing a gear I am getting a knocking like sound at the rear , same think occasionally happens when I am reversing..

Any idea what this could be?

I have a friend who had the very same problem. It was diagnosed as a differential problem at great expense (>€2000) to be repaired.

On gaining a second opinion, it turns out that "something" was out of sync and this could be sorted by a upgrade of the car software. €250 later and the problem is sorted and not a greasy hand to be seen.

In my case it was my diff which was giving the problem. Not far off the price mentioned was quoted by a few places, got one place to do it considerably cheaper and it is now gone.

Seems to be a re occuring thing in jeeps.

That's correct git_ireland, from what I understand, the diff issue is a well known problem with Jeeps. The general advice is replace with new as a second hand unit will probably fail too!

I'm sure a specialist gearbox refurb company could do a job on a diff but you might have to ship to the UK.

The second opinion was from Rathdown Motors in Terenure (a Jeep service centre)

Excuse my Ignorance but what part of the car is causing the "knocking" problem ( not very car savey :)

Sounds to me like a universal joint in the driveshaft.

Get it sorted before it wrecks the driveshaft though chances are if you can hear it it may be too late.

Drive shaft services in Dublin will repair the shaft for you if it has damaged the yokes
