Texting?

    Dilemma.
Well, a few months ago out of desperation and boredom I applied for a work placement, but I heard nothing back and forgot about it, then I heard back and really regretted it so I explained why I didn't want to do it (waste of nine months for a not very skilled job)

Anyway it was grand, two weeks later and the woman texts me saying 'hi ***** would you be able to work the following dates'

And she said what dates. I am very confused as to why she would do this, as there was never an interview or a meeting, and we agreed I wasn't going to go for the placement, what should I say?

    What, really?
    How so??

Even initially she text instead of ringing....
I just find it weird that she would ask me to work with no prior discussion....

    I agree.

    Scam.

Was it a txt from a personal phone or a FAS text service? If it was just from a phone it is possibly fake, fas workers would not use a mobile to txt afaik.

It's a personal number, from the woman who owns the cafe (presumably)

Just wondering why in the name of god she would text just to ask if I had worked, out of nowhere, after never asking me if I wanted to work etc, like she gave me hours and everything.....It is soooo weird.

She may have you confused with another ?

Do you want to do it now? If not just tell her that you dont want to do it unless paid - Or even just reply to the text saying 'not interested'.

seems kinda weird alright getting back to you now but if cafes can get wpp workers i'd say the whole operation isnt really professional at all and maybe she got you mixed up like what delancy said or maybe she's trying to chance her arm.

I'm just confused why she would ask me for just a certain amount of days, AFTER I said I wasn't interested in wasting nine months of my life washing up etc.
Like, she definitely didn't get me confused because she said my name in the text, but she didn't even say 'would you LIKE to work a few days'. She just said 'are you available on ....... you will be working the folllowing hours:.....'

And she definitely got my e-mail saying I wasn't interested because I have it on file, and she wrote back saying thanks that's grand...

Why the hell has she text me?

No one here can tell you why she sent you a text.

the quickest why to sort this out is to PHONE her

Maybe she had something going on and needed extra staff to help out for a few days?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭strandroad

She probably had your number saved on her phone and another person's working for her with the same name, she wanted to text them and texted you. Just reply that she must have confused you with someone else.

A work placement in a cafe? That sh*t pisses me off. Them WPP's on Fas are for the most part a way to get free labour. I totally understand gaining experience, contacts etc are great but businesses are totally taking advantage of this program.

Anyway, I reckon she is stuck for staff and doesn't want to pay for staff so she decided to chance her arm by texting you to see if you were still stuck for work.

Wanting to contact outside FAS. Might be trying to offer a small amount, cash in hand because she is stuck for a few days would be my guess.

Worth ringing to find out for sure what is going on. If you have no interest in working for her then you have nothing to lose by ringing, finding out what it is and then turning her down again afterwards.

If it was wrong number, I'd expect her to work it out fairly fast and text saying so.

Ok e-mailed her but never heard anything back, and she asked me for tomorrow so her lack of reply makes me think it was just a mistake.

I know what you should do, make a thread and ask a load of random strangers about it instead of simply texting back saying....said i wasn't interested, remember?

It is always best to ask if your unsure TBH.

If the original contact was through FAS then the employer could be breaking agreements with FAS if they contact the person directly or trying to do the person out of money or any number of things.

Why not just ask since it is rare that the other person can't wait a few hours for a response?

Fair enough, my level of sarcasm was uncalled for.

    DUH, already did that. :rolleyes::rolleyes:
Here was I thinking a forum was to ask questions about whatever the hell you want. Silly me.

Yeah anyway you were actually right, she seemed to have confused me with someone else. I thought it unlikely, but thankfully it was the case.

    Thanks all.

it is a forum for askign questions, but a small bit of common sense is needed. if someone texts you out of the blue asking you to work you can assume it was them making a mistake or a person chancing there arm. either way a simple phone call would clarify it in a matter of seconds. it is also a shock that a cafe would even ask you to work on the WPP scheme as how much experiance could you get from them. i agree with previous posts that it is annoying how companies use this program to gain cheap employees.

also dont be too sceptical about people with the same names getting messages for you. i was once sent for a interview with boston scientific in london. was sent by a recruitment agency, paid for flights and hotel by the company. was very unsure due to their area of work not being anything related to me, construction and sales.

went anyway, great first round meeting for the job as business support. went for second round and met a woman who promptly told me i was not the man she had requestion for the interview. i live in limerick and turns out a lad with the same name as me and same birthdate applied for the job but he lived in dublin. mistake was made by agency. im am 5.11 height and blonde, lad she had met before and wanted to interview was 6.3 and ginger
