Failed a module

I failed a module. Does this mean that I have to repeat the module next year? I failed math and got a low CA which means I failed. Can I not resit this module in August?

You should definitely be able to repeat in august. Is it the first time you've failed it?

It is my first year. I have R in a module which means i can resit it in august then I have F for math which means I failed. I hope I can resit both in August because I'm dead if I have to repeat the year. In the Autumn written examination form ( I hope this is the right form for me to fill out) it says:

If your overall result was deferred (and your results do not include any failed modules) and you are permitted to take written examinations during the Autumn diet of examinations please fill in your details below and return this form to Student Awards (Registry) on or before 3rd August 2011.

Does this mean that I would have to repeat the module that I got an F in??

There seems to be a lot of confusion over the F and R on the exam results. Your best bet would be to ring the registry...or try to.
What course are you doing? I failed maths in my first year, both the exam and the c.a but I was able to resit it in August.

Thank you very much. I will call them. I am doing Applied Physics (AP1). The maths module is MS126

This is more of a hunch than anything but I think F might mean one has failed both the final exam and CA, but R means that one just failed the exam, but passed CA.

These notifications would have been more important back when one had to pass both CA and the final exam (times have changed - it's just an overall 40%+ required now).

If the above is true, one can still resit the exam in August in hopes of passing if they get F or R (unless CA was worth more than 40% and they got 0 for it or something).

Thanks. I called the registry today and Garf was correct. If you fail the CA you have to resit the module in August. If you pass the CA and fail the exam you resit the exam element in August. Also with the R it means that the CA carries forward in August.

Since it's math I guess it is just 1 exam I resit in August but I was advised to email my lecturer to confirm that.

Oh wow - so if one gets an F, that means the repeat exam in August counts for 100% of the module while the CA doesn't carry, but if one gets an R that means the August repeat exam only counts for the original exam proportion while CA does carry?

    Is the above true?

Or does one have/get to repeat CA somehow as well in August when they get an F?

That is what I am unsure of. The woman I talked to confused me a bit but I was told it is different depending on your lecturer and you are best to email him/her.

    Depends on lecturer.

Some will make you do the CA and re-sit exam.

CA even though not in DCU during the summer could be an essay due in early August for example.
