    Hey,

I am planning on heading to Colombia at the end of August for 3 weeks. Initially I had planned on going with a friend but he now say he's not 100% sure if he can go. I still haven't booked flights yet because I was waiting for him to decide. I was just wondering if there will be many other backpackers there or would I be better off going to India or China? I have travelled loads before and it wouldn't be a case of being too shy or anything. I'm just afraid there might not be many backpackers going to Colombia.

    Cheers

Mate, do it. I have been there twice and planning my next trip over there for next November. I have lived there for nearly a year altogether. I would really really recommend the place. There are loads of backpackers and deadly things to do. I would recommend Crany Croc hostel in Bogota if you are looking to meet other people. It is a really nice hostel and the people there are cool. My mate owns a restaurant across the road called "The Crazy Mongolian" which is really good healthy food. Fire me a mail if you want to know anything in particular. Wait til you see you women!:pac:

Also if you want cheap flights there. I would go through Edreams and fly into Fort Lauderdale. Then book flight seperately from there through Spirit airlines. Should cost around 600 euro all in, compared to the 1000 youll be quoted booking direct.

Yeah definately do it. I went there as solo woman and loved it. Never felt in any danger compared to more touristy areas. People genuinely interested in why you're visting and gorgeous scenary. Def go up north to Cartagena. There's a small beach you can go to from there, can't remember name. It's very basic, no electricity and only accesible by water. I only stayed 2 days but wish i'd stayed more, it might be called Playa Blanca or Costa Blanca, maybe bhanni knows?

Yeah don't hesitate for a second, absolutely brilliant spot and much much safer than it's reputation would lead you to believe.

Probably the best thing about it is the fact that it hasn't had a shedload of tourism, as opposed to the likes of Peru, which means

    a) The tourists you meet there are more outgoing and up for adventure than the backpackers you usually meet, and

    b) The locals are over the moon to see tourists, will do anything to help you out, and in some cases actually come up to you and thank you for visiting their country.

Get your teeth into some basic Spanish before you go if you can, it's not necessary to get by in Colombia, but it will change your trip hugely being able converse on the basics with the locals, they´ll love you for it.
