I'm in the market for a new car at the moment.
Currently considering a 1.6 Petrol. I'd prob do no more than 10/12K a year? Lots of people are telling me I am mad and should go for a diesel engine. At what mileage is deisel more economical. I don't want to end up resenting the car cause it guzzles fuel.

"New" as in registered this year or New as in new to you. Also, what class of are you talking about? Focus or Mondeo or other sized vehicle.

In short, Diesel will probably be faster / more economical (up to 30%) / cheaper to tax (if post July 2008).

    But..

Petrol (assuming no turbo) will be cheaper to repair....

The 1.9 Diesel engine in those cars will be very noisy, but very "tune-able" if that is your thing..

Petrol will be quieter, and we had a 1.6 A3, which was good on fuel.

    Petrol will be "nicer" IMHO.
