Yes, no, maybe so? I got an invite the other day, just as I'm on the brink of pulling the plug on facebook, and really can't see how this thing is any different (apart from the cool spinny action it does to your friends' heads when you add them to a circle).

Anyone joining it, or is it just a lesser facebook?

social networks are social networks. they dont have any major differences, for example bebo before facebook. they were nearly identicle but facebook became popular. so this may do the same thing but i doubt that facebook will fail as badly as bebo. i dunno and i dont really care.

There's an thread on it in the Computers & Technology forum, here. It's early days yet, but the first thing to note is that you have more granular control over who gets to see your updates e.g. you can limit one to just "Family" or "Acquaintances" using the "Circles" feature. Another is that the photo galleries are already superior, because it uses Google's existing Picasa system.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

    Care to elaborate on why?

It never makes sense to me when people make statements like this as if they're talking about heroin! It's only a webpage.

    Not a great comparison, tbh.

Heroin is nowhere near as addictive as social networking.

Apparently, they will make it so your Google+ profile has to be public
. On my phone, so can't link to the article but a quick search should find it.

I'm still not brave enough to quit it for good!! I know I should, what with the real facebook addiction kicking in primarily around exam times, but I have friends abroad that I know I won't make the time to contact otherwise. That said, there are sh!tloads of non-friends there and I don't know why on earth I waste my time reading their crap. Ahhh!

It's quite liberating quitting it! :D
I can't see me having a huge amount if interest or dedication in google+ but I'm just intrigued by the differences and that, for once, google is actually giving Facebook a challenge

Until Facebook, very simply, adopt all of the good features Google+ has and then people have no reason to move from Facebook to Google +!

Swings and roundabouts really. As I said I haven't used it but from reading and taking to people who have, they seem to just prefer googles way of doing things. I'm not a "social networker" myself anymore but people I know that are using google are and they seem to prefer it to Facebook.

Google+ looks like it could beat Facebook in the long run.

it freaks me out a little bit how much more info we'll be giving google though.within google+ they'll search the images you upload.if they spot a face in your picture who also has an account, they'll suggest you to be friends. Also if you use their voice chat service,be able to decipher what you're saying/interestedin to further customise personalised search....google already knows more about me than my boyf does :(

Very true. Thing about Social Networks is, there is no long term because, as My Space and bebo have shown us already, people are very very willing to drop one Social Network for another if they get sick of their current one or this new one has better features. Even if Google + does take over, another will take it's place after a few years, then another etc.

Yeah, I've got a boyfriend who's particularly paranoid about giving out information because of his job, and he already wants to delete his account, despite only setting it up last night! I don't think he's aware of the above, but if he finds out... it's bye bye google+...!

Not really. The only social network worth going on is the one you can be social on. the one where your friends are.

None of my friends are on Bebo or Facebook etc., they're on Facebook. So I use that one.

Except Google+ is tied to Google Search and GMail, which are two services that dominate the web and practically everyone uses. When Google+ really takes off it'll be very hard to get away from.

I like how easy and intuitive the Circles feature is, but that's about it. Facebook doesn't have anything like that though.

I have too many friends on facebook I don't know that well. Think I'm gonna use google+ under a fake name and just add people I actually like!

I don't know why people get so addicted to FB. It's boring. It's the bloody games that suck me in. :D

That's the whole idea of Google plus you can put people in circles of close friends, people you know from school but don't really like or talk to,work colleagues or a twitter type follow.

I think Google Plus will win out in the long run it seems very good so far a lot of the good fetures of facebook and twitter either matched or bettered eg their photo uploader and viewer surpasses facebooks a mile

I wonder how long facebook will last once google pulls youtube and zynga from it?

    Circles, pffft.

If Mad Men has thought me anything about advertising, it's that anything round should be called a carousel.

Google+ doesnt work as a concept for me. I dont use facebook but I follow about 300 people on twitter, and have about 280 followers. I post tech stuff and other related items, and retweet interesting stuf.

When I follow someone on twitter, their posts are automatically in my feed, unless they talk to @someoneelse. So I can use twitter as both a social tool and an aggregator. I follow boards. I follow rte. I follow the Economist. And people I know. And journos. etc.

Thats the point, and it is why twitter works. On google+ you don't follow stephen fry to get his posts, he has to add you to his circle.

For that reason celebs and brands aren't going to bother. Its not an aggregator. As for the other social stuff, unlike facebook it doesn't need someone else's acceptance to get in his feed, you can add who you like to your circle which apparantly pushes your ( possibly unwanted) stuff to them.

This seems ass over tit. It would mean that someone popular , or a brand like The Economist, would get a lot of people adding them to circles and a massively busy stream, meanwhile they would post to their circle of 20 people they have added. Pointless.
