Group therapy focusing specifically on Social Anxiety?

    Hey everybody! :D

Ok, so I've been a long time lurker and figured I may as well set up an account. I've been suffering from Social Anxiety for quite a while now. I've been on medication for about 4 years for depression but really the pills just treat the symptoms rather than the cause which is essentially my fear of people.

I've been looking at group therapy as I feel being in the company of people with similar issues to me could be beneficial. So how exactly does group therapy work? Are they based on particular issues (depression, specific phobias etc.) or is it more of a 'free for all' where people with any issues can come and participate? Or would one on one CBT be the best course of action? Sorry if this post comes across as incoherent, kinda at a loss as to what to say.

    Thanks. :D

Aware have support groups all over the country.

    http://www.aware.ie/help/support/support_groups_faqs
How long is the group meeting?
The group usually lasts for an hour to an hour and a half, and is then followed by tea/coffee.

    How many will be there?
It’s impossible to predict how many will attend any group. On average, attendance will usually be bewteen five and ten, with a mixture of men and women.

Do I have to say anything when I get there?
Usually people are asked to introduce themselves to the group on a first name basis. After that, you don’t have to speak if you don‘t want to, you can sit back and listen. However, you may be invited to share if you wish.

Can someone come with me for support?
Many people coming to a group for the first time bring a friend or relative for moral support. While the support of your loved ones is of course important, it is normally best if the person accompanying you leaves once the group starts and returns for tea/coffee afterwards. People are usually more open with strangers than with those they know. Your group facilitator will be able to advise you further.

What if I don’t want to attend a group just yet or I cannot get to a group?
Aware will shortly launch online depression support groups to help you to access support even if you cannot travel to a group or would prefer a more anonymous format. As well as this, we already offer confidential depression support by email (you will receive a response from one of our trained volunteers within one working day).
