They say that you're supposed to eat five portions of fruit or veg every day.
How do they know it's not six? Where's their evidence.

I submit that this is all a pack of lies and a campaign of misinformation.

    fruit and veg is overrated.
just eat the odd orange to avoid scurvy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,072 ✭✭✭✭My name is URL

The point is obviously just to persuade people to eat more fresh fruit & veg. The '5' bit is merely a nice tidy tagline that can be attached to ads/packages.

Indeed. Isn't the general recommendation actually 9 a day? The campaigning for 5 a day is to keep it achievable.

Whatever about the human jungle ,it keeps the orangutans regular and the chimpanzees can count to more than 5 .

Surely cider counts as a fruit?

Nonsense of the highest order. People have survived for thousands of years without '5 a day'. It's a marketing device, nothing more.

I remember hearing that it's actually 9-a-day, but 5-a-day sounds more achievable for people.

This just about sums up our government's dietary recommendations alright.

    Ridiculous and corrupt.

I get where you're coming from OP and I'd love to know if someone could answer this.

If I don't eat much by way of fruit and veg, but do usually eat say 1.5 portions of veg with my dinner, usually have something with lunch (say, salad in my sandwiches or vegetable soup), don't eat any dairy but eat plenty of protein and get enough fibre (that heavy brown bread, not the sliced pan ****, spuds etc)...

Am I seriously gonna end up malnourished?

Like, I just don't buy it that I need any more.

I kinda have an inclination that this is up there with all the dairy that's recommended simply cos there's supply for which demand must created.

Also, are all fruit/veg equal? Aren't berries PACKED with nutrients? Does 100g of parsnip/turnip/apple = 100g blueberries???

Four cans of cider and a box of Jaffa Cakes.

Really sets you up for the day ahead.

Actually people used to eat more fruit and vegetables in the "olden days" because before modern farming techniques were introduced meat was prohibitively expensive. Granted in Ireland they would have eaten less paypaya and melons but what they did eat was more likely to have been grown locally and therefore more nutritionally dense.

True. We probably eat too much meat now if anything.
