The episode tonight S17 ep3 was brilliant. One of my favourite ever i think. It was what it should be about, cars. No messing about with stupid challenges. Classic Top Gear! The segment about the second hand cars for the price of a new Nissan was excellent, when it came on I thought, the cars that I would buy for 7 grand instead of that piece of **** and then thats exactly what they did! Loved it.

fully agree, even the "scripted" parts were laugh out load funny, pop up head lamps, vijazzle.. gas.

458vMclaren, nissan v merc/bmw, new landy all excellent pieces

this episode had more content than the whole of last season!

All agreed in this neck of the woods too.

I had a good giggle at Vettel, with his Some Say.... interruption of Jeremy

The only issue I'd have with it, is speaking as a Paddy Irishman, how feckin much would it cost to bring in that Merc? white powder, herbal essences and Lady Go Go juice included?? VRT on it would be a killer.

Top Gear is back. Where have you been all these years.

Yeah, great show tonight. Pity that merc would cost 1500 a year in motor tax over here
Was good to see Clarkson do the opposite of what I thought with the Ferrari/McLaren. I thought he'd wánk over the british McLaren, but even though it was technically better, he said it lacked something and he wasn't blown away with it. Definitely not as sexy as the 458 imho.

According to ros.ie, an 02 cl v12 is worth €26,401 and the vrt due would be €9,504

Brilliant episode tonight, and heres hoping it thought a few Irish people a lesson and we dont see as many brand new Nissan Micras and the like one our roads.

Sure why would you import one heres one for 9,950 nd you know you could knock a few quid of that really.

excellent episode - best in years I think. the bit about the merc & bmw was great but not really relevant in ireland - where either would be 1600 per annum road tax alone ( something your average Nissan buyer is deeply swelled by )

Ah yeh but I dont think they were telling everyone to go out and buy Cl500 or 8 series BMW,s they were just showing that you can buy lot more car for the same money as you can buy a small Nissan, fingers crossed some poeple took notice:)

They also had a nice looking RX8 and a few other good cars for the 7k. I was half hoping James May would turn up with a third car, something more sensible, but I forget, it's TopGear! :)

May is right at the end though - none of that really compares to the Nissan on total cost of ownership when tax, insurance, fuel efficiency, maintenance etc is taken into consideration.

    Great episode. Loved it.

What are the tax/insurance rates in the UK in comparison to Ireland though?

OK fuel costs will be about the same, maybe a bit more over there from what I remember of them the last time I was driving in England. Maintenance on the BMW would be hard as I imagine there would be an increased level of difficulty in getting spare parts for a 23 yr old car. I wouldn't think that the Merc would have the same problems though.... I guess we'll find out in E6 what the verdict was.

That's a 500, V8, not the V12 600. And it's had 3 owners! Better value in the UK. Often though, cars like that are cheaper here.

lol - I'd say the owner of that Merc was legen... wait for it... dary.

I was half thinking about posting a topic on the Motors forum about it, but that **** new car vs great old car feature was a subject close to my heart. I think it's ****ing criminal that we have a scrappage scheme here that encourages people to scrap off perfectly good cars to buy **** new ones. I would rather have my old '96 car (that I traded in against a used car 2 years ago) than any new car that is elligible for the scrappage scheme.

Of course there are budget issues. Take the S2000 for example. I was looking at these in England when I was shopping. Two years ago I wouldn't have gotten one so new for £6,500 and the tax, insurance and running costs would be higher than the Nissan. On top of that, if you're bringing it to Ireland you have to pay VRT. The VRT is why I'm not driving an S2000 today.

But in my head, it's a no brainer. I'd much rather pay the extra running costs for the S2000 than drive around in that dreadful little 3 cycliner shopping cart. Budget issues aside, I can not fathom how people buy **** new cars rather than good old ones.

Be interesting to see if the new Stig's time is better than that of Ben Collins

    Very funny show.

Loved when they went on a bit of a slagging match about "Car owners clubs".

People who go to see other peolpes cars who are just like theirs.

    Especially the MG owners! :pac:

Am nervous about next weeks show, when clarkson said, "apologies for this show being about cars, normal service will be resumed next week":(

Great show, loads of cars, distinct lack of Hammond & when he was on screen he was kept in check, no who's first to boil an egg with a clutch disc challenge, motor related star which went down well, & realism crossed with humour (the final 7k section).

Nicely done, more of that please.

Yeh I knew it was the V8 not the V12, but my bad was fiar sure it was the 500 in the show I just went back and checked I stand corrected. The 3 owners bit wouldnt bother me in the slightest once its in good nick. Either way I was just showing you can get luxo barges over here relatively cheap because people are scared of by tax insurance etc on them.

Great episode. Best in a long time. Really enjoyable as they didn't go over the top with scripted humour/incidents.

Surely he'll take the Liana out in perfect conditions and keep at it till he beats it? He would have the luxury of being able to do that!

Really wish they would stick to this format more often. Nothing wrong with the odd stunt or challenge but they've overdosed on it in recent years.

I'm sure they are aware of the feedback.

So far this season seems to have been decent enough viewing, with Ep3 being the highlight.
