What is with these cars and rust? My partner is selling a car to fund an mx5 and we have checked a few out their out of interest. 02' & 03' mx5's with epic rust going on underneath? Knackerd sills, wheel arche and bottom of engines covered in it.
Wouldn't expect a 02 car to have such rust going on.

    Thanks

    Tell me about :-/

The repairs I done to my sills three years ago now need cut out and new bits welded in. Classic areas - rear of sills just in front of rear wheels; entire rear wheel arches.

My car is a Northern car, spends most of the year up there, so does get its fair share of salt.

Still, wouldn't put me off owning one :-D

I'm starting to wonder do people cross the channels in their mx5's or something.

    Ridiculous amounts of underbody rust.

I had a 1992 until last year and never had a problem with rust. Maybe it's just the newer models.

Yep I've started researching MX-5 NAs and rust is the main problem. You need to find one that's been looked after by an enthusiast.

Don't forget that JDM cars were generally not rust-proofed in production, but then again it seems that there are some rust traps in the design.

One thing I do is when washing the car, I wash under the wheel arches, sills and floors until the water runs clear. It has worked so far for the ol' vintage car at home.

Hmmm my one is 99 and it does not haveuch of a problem with rust. Yes under the car it's not the most prettiest car, but nothing that would stand out and be unusual. My one is pure Irish yoke thought, so I guess it newer seen any salt.

Yeah mine is a 02 and no rust either. It's meant to be a common problem in the uk though.
