Getting to Parachute Club, Clonbullogue, Co. Offaly.

I am interested in taking a sky diving course at the Irish Paracute Club in Offaly, however I live in Dublin 22. I can't seem to find any close means of transport to the location other than train/coach + taxi which would run up quite a bill. I am not in possession of a car and I do not know anyone that could drive me there.

I plan on making numerous trips to the location if all goes well, anyone know any good(cheap) means of getting there?

    Thanks :D

It really is in the middle of nowhere.

Are there people you will be going with? Even if they can give you a lift from the nearest(!) town.

Plan a weekend and stay overnight.

Bring a bike on the train and cycle from the nearest station.

Your only options are Bus Eireann 120 to Edenderry or Irish Rail to Portarlington.

After that it's taxi or cycle I'm afraid.

I live within a mile of the IPC in Offaly. The nearest town is Edenderry (7miles) or Portarlington (9miles). After them its a taxi unfortunately.

If you're stuck to find the place I'd have no problem picking you up in Edenderry and dropping you out to the IPC for the first time so you can get to know the area a bit and get your bearings. I'm sure after one or two trips down you'd get to know some of the regular commuters down from Dublin and they would bring you from. There are a lot of regulars who car pool and they are a friendly bunch so I'm sure you'd find someone close to you.

OP, while I sympathise with your plight you have to remember that for obvious reasons a parachute club needs to be located well away from power lines so they're always going to be in remote areas, miles away from the nearest town with little in the way of ground transport options.

You'd actually be wrong. On a busy day the pilot (we call him frenchie) does be landed, loaded up with the next crew and taken off again before the parachutists even land. There are a few pictures up there of tandems with the plane in the background and it's nearly vertical when he has let his load out and is returning to base. It's quiet a sight to see.

THere is a facebook page for the IPC and if you join there you can post up a request for a carshare/lift. It'd be no harm to offer a few quid for petrol as that way people will be glad to give you a lift the second time :-)

After a while you'll get to know a lot of the Dubs (Us Corkonians are no use to you!!) and you'll find them messaging/texting each other about lifts.

I'm only a novice jumper so I'm in no way an instructor but PLEASE DON'T DO THIS. I think its a minimum of 200 jumps reccomended before you even attempt the simpler BASE jumps.

There is a few lads at the IPC that do base jumping or Wingsuiting or even teh 2 combined.

A perfect example of why amenities in the middle of nowhere shouldn't be give planning permission.

Taxi fare from Edenderry is likely to be closer to €25 each way.

Its a parachute club where mad people jump from planes so id say its in an ideal location . Plenty of open space to land etc.

Beside Woodlawn station would have been perfect, or anywhere along the Waterford-Rosslare line if it hadn't been closed. Or even the WRC for that matter. All have plenty of open space with nobody for miles.

Maybe someone else will start up another club in them areas. Would the club have a shuttle bus that would pick up from one of the main towns?

I've never paid more than a tenner for a taxi from Edenderry to Clonbullogue. I only suggested as high as €15 because it's a mile extra. It's been in Clonbullogue for years at this stage. I'd imagine there was never much official planning permission sought or granted its been that long. A nod from the landowners and the local council man was usually enough back then.

They don't have a shuttle service but it easily accessible from Edenderry which is serviced by the bus and Portarlington which is serviced by train.
