Seriously... I am. I took the G key off my Acer Aspire 5552 and can't get it back on, so I took off the F key to see how the little bits are supposed to go together. Now neither will go back on for me, I can get the key to click onto the little adapter bits underneath, but it leaves the key loose and slanted.

Any advice/idea how to get this sorted before I have to suffer the indignity of paying to get two keys put back on my laptop?

Why did you take the 'G' off in the first place?

You probably should have taken the # key or something else less important off as your test

The G was being undersensitive, I wanted to clean underneath it. Why would I take it off for no reason? And I took off the F because it was right beside the G and easier to take off.

    Um... thanks?

Is it the kind with two square hingey bits that intersect and the rubber nub in the middle? I remember this happening to my sisters laptop, and like you I removed another to see how it worked. Took a bit of patience but they do go back on. Make sure the double hinge thing is connected properly to itself and the keyboard base, then check the underside of the key to see how far apart the hinge bits need to be before they'll take the key back on. Then press the key on firmly and hope for the best.

If any little fragment of plastic has snapped off the hinge assembly or key itself, you probably need a replacement.

Cheers, it's those alright, horrible things! I'll give it a bit more time and see how I get on, fingers crossed :p

    Cool story bro

I took my 'B' off recently because it was permanently pressed. It fixed itself eventually but took with it the F and the V. I'm typing this with the help of the on-screen keyboard, but my new laptop is on its way.

You are not alone. Consider substituting q for g and £ for f

fyi laptop keyboards can be bought online for not too much money, if the laptop is in anyway still reliable, could be a much cheaper fix then buying a new one.

Looks like you may have to et yoursel a replacement keyboard ;), as a temp measure you can change the keyboard keys using this program sharpkeys
    http://sharpkeys.codeplex.com/
Substitute lesser used keys for your missing G and F

Search on Youtube for your keyboard make, there is a load of videos showing you how to replace keys on laptop keyboards. I took off one of my keys to clean it recently, couldn't figure out how to put it back on, but I found a video for my model of laptop, which showed me exactly what I had to do. Now it works perfectly.

Cheers for all the replies, I finally got one of them back on, there were two little holes inside the larger part of the connector parts, which I hadn't seen. Got one back one, the other is broken from being... forceful... So a new F is on it's way from ebay. No need for a new keyboard though, which is good news!

Corkie, it's nice to know I've a kindred spirit on the computer disaster front, my worst - set the power to the wrong voltage by accident once... fan just went up in smoke!

    Thanks again everyone :)
