Anyone know how much I should be paying to get brake line hoses on front left and right wheels replaced in an Audi A4? What should be the price if Im going to an independent mechanic?

My car failed NCT yesterday due to perished brake line hoses. Got the car fully serviced two weeks ago and I got the timing belt and water pump changed too so it cost me a good bit and now this.

Mechanic told me he had checked them and he taught they were OK. The mechanic is honest by the way and I have been going to him for years.

Another question, the car has to go back on the machine for the brake test, If the car only failed for brake line hoses, is their any chance they could fail me for any other things that they discovered on the brake test i.e. discs or pads or braking effort that passed on the first occasion? I will be doing the test again the week after next after I get the hoses replaced.

are the hoses not just a visual?? they were on our 206 van but that was doe test. he just looked at the in the carpark

if its just a retest you are going for they wont be looking at disks or pads etc unless they are very bad and they would be dangerous to drive on

edit. we paid 60 euro for the ones on the 206. 30 for parts and 30 for labour

The brake hoses may well be fine (like your mechanic says) but it's not unusual for the nct lads to say they are perished.

Your looking at about €25 per side, then there's the labour, so all in should come to about €100, at an indy.

You'll then need to pay €29 for the retest. They retest the brakes as the hydraulic circuit will have been opened and want to make sure it's bled correctly....

If it has to be hooked up to the test computer in the NCT centre then I'm almost sure it is considered a retest.

The brake lines would have been spotted at the visual check at the end of the test. Your brakes would already have been tested during the rolling road test. So once the imbalence etc is all ok on your test sheet then the brake operation is ok.

The failure was a visual check on the brake line hoses, but the nct mechanic told me that it would have to go up on the machine again and in that case I would have to pay 28 euro for the retest, It will be just the brake test as it says on the test fault sheet. What I want to know is if I just do the brake line hoses, will it be ok then? They cant just say my brake pads are worn a week and a half after the test saying they were ok can they? If thats the way then its a joke.

The nct brake test doesn't tell you if your pads/disks etc are worn. It test the brake performance and balance. Worn pads wouldn't have any effect on this unless they were down the metal, in which case I hope you wouldn't need the NCT to tell you you had a problem:P

Cheers, just checking because I don't trust these nct tests at all. |Next they might fail me because I have birdsh*t on my car bonnet and thats a visual defect. :D

I have to get this done on my Audi A4 tomorrow. My mechanic said it's common in older A4s (mines 03) to have to get it done. I've to get all 4 corners done and he's charging €220. That's for 4 brake line hoses, brake fluid and the labour. It's not too bad.
