Well, the groups major subsidiaries are Audi, Seat, Skoda etc. BUT also included are BUGATTI:eek:, LAMBOS & BENTLEYS.Surely this makes the VW group a stand out putting BMW,Mercedes etc. miles behind in terms of company size.Im not saying BMW or Mercs are bad car makers.Just think theyre tiny companies compared to VW.Agree?

The other way around actually. The original Porsche was made from VW parts, and the founder of Porsche started off at VW.(I think)

GM are much larger with more brands surely? Although they aren't all doing well these days:eek:

True, but they havent got Bugatti, Lamborghini,Bentley and porsche affiliated with them.

If we go on sales by volume rather than who owns the most brand names Toyota would be the largest I think. Link.

    The biggest I suppose.

Companies like Lamborghini and Bugatti earned their names and pedigrees well before the VG took a shine to buying them up.

What do you mean by biggest?
    Most car models?
    Most factories?
    Most staff working for them?
Largest amount of countries sold into?
    Greatest profits?
    Greatest turnover(cash)?
    Most cars sold?

    Etc

Very hard to find recent figures to be honest for any of the above to use for comparison.

I presume the biggest means that most units pushed out the factory door per year. In that case it would not be VG.

    Global car sales by company:

    1. Toyota
    2. GM
    3. VAG

But GM is likely to take the no 1 spot again this year after Toyota has been the number 1 for the first time in the past few years

Interesting is car production by country:

    1. Japan (by far)
    2. Germany
    3. China
    4. USA

And surprising to some is the car sales by country:

    1. China
    2. USA

Give it 5-10 years and China will be top of that one too I recon...

It was amazing that porsche did very nearly pull off the take over of vw. Considering the size of porsche compared to vw, it was a daring attempt. It all went tits up in the end and vw swept up porsche.

None that we get here...yet. China will be the next Korea IMO.

Fiat SpA own Ferarri (as well as Alfa, Lancia, Iveco and effective control of Chyrsler), so VAG aren't the only vehicle group to have something special alongside their ordinary ones.

vw and porsche are owned by porsche automobil holdings se or in short the piech and porsche familys

Porsche Automobil Holding SE, usually shortened to Porsche SE (German pronunciation: [ˈpɔʁʃə][3]) a Societas Europaea or European Public Company, is a German based holding company with investments in the automotive industry.
Porsche SE is headquartered in Zuffenhausen, a city district of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg and is owned by the Piëch and Porsche families, and Qatar Holdings, through the Qatar Investment Authority (10%).[4] Through its investment in Porsche Zwischenholding GmbH, it owns 50.1% Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, which is the manufacturer of a range of sports cars and SUVs, and 50.7% of Volkswagen AG

    That's a tad outdated ;)

Porsche and VW are close to completing a merger (they say it's even odds it will be complete by the end of the year). This will leave Porsche under VW leadership

BTW VW is extremely ambitious in that it plans to be the worlds biggest car manufacturer by 2018. They've got a bit of work to do before then :D

VW Group certainly has the biggest market share in Ireland. If you add up all the passenger car brands it comes to about 23% of the market. That's well ahead of anyone else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,718 ✭✭✭Matt Simis

Irrelevant of their sales volume, they clearly are the singularly most influential maker in the industry. If one had a stat on most media attention their brands combined would be miles ahead.

Obviously not saying the rest dont have mindshare or influence, but as one entity its hard to see anyone meeting or surpassing them. This is also the big area the Chinese need to "buy" into (they have a woeful image in the US/Euro).

True but without VW most of those would not exist today or would not be as succesful.

Lamborghini changed hands several times over the two decades until VW took over, none of these owners ever solved Lambos quality issues until VW showed up. Bugatti was essentially extinct again after the EB110 until VW bought up the name and revived it. God only knows where Bentley would be, probably China.

A good example of whta not to do with a company is Fords asscoiation with Ghia. Ghia was one of the foremost coachbuilders of the early 20th century, the name was sold a couple of times and Ford denigrated it to a trim level on its ordinary cars. A sad end indeed to a great name.

id say vw has price and quality conformity. Some cars are good, but too expensive, some make car prices are ok, but quality is sh1te.
