Idiots Guide to Saorview

Firstly apologies if this has been asked a hundred times before but I've searched through a lot of threads and couldn't find anything.

I recently bought a Samsung 32C530 TV from powercity as i had heard it was Saorview compatible. However i can't seem to be able to tune it correctly for Saorview.

I'm with UPC and i can tune in all 18 or so analogue channels in perfect quality (well as perfect as analogue is anyway) but it isn't picking up any digital channels.

    Anyone else experience similar problems?

    Thanks in advance.

You need a TV aerial (UHF) for SAORVIEW.

    UPC is "cable".

Thanks. I was thinking that may be the case but i wasn't sure.

Not sure if I'll bother getting an aerial as the only thing i want Saorview for is HD GAA and Ireland football/rugby matches.

Hopefully RTÉ HD will be on UPC soon.

If you are in Dublin, a simple aerial, like a rabbit ear type, will probably do it for you. Try it before you dismiss it.

Aye, I am using a rabbit ears in Dublin and the signal is strong. No need for an external aerial. For referernce the signal is coming from 3 Rock.

    Hi,

I am based in Dublin and was receiving Saorview signal from 3Rock using a rabbits ears aerial on a windowsill. It was good mostly and had a signal strength of 9/10 and quality of 7/10. I did seem to get the odd period of pixilation though which seemed to be getting worse. It might have been weather related or maybe RTENL dropped their signal transmission strength.

I got a bit fed up of that happening so bought a correct band UHF outdoor aerial recently to place in the attic or outdoors.
Before I went to the trouble of installing it properly I tried placing it in a corner on the floor, behind the TV, facing a wall .
Lo and behold I received signal strength of 10/10 and quality of 10/10.:)

The end result is the the UHF aerial is completely hidden and quality is perfect -- happy days.

Watty and others were pretty scathing about all indoor aerials and I now see what they mean.

I'm in Bray and use these rabbit ears from Power City here

I usually get about 80% signal which I'm very happy with. I'm close enough to the Greystones transmitter though.

    Hi,

The aerial in Power City is €21.47 and needs to be powered. The correct Group UHF aerial is only €12 from www.tvtrade.ie (I'm sure others have similar at similar prices) with no external power source needed.
I know that coax cable and a connector is required and there would be delivery costs but still the end result is a step up in terms of quality for much the same costs (or at least that is what I have found).

Meanwhile, in a field just behind a factory on the outskirts of Dublin. . .
