If I accept the 3rd choice course i was offered this week the 7th july, can i still be offered a higher preference course on the 22nd august after the results?? Im not that keen on the course but id rather have it as a back up than nothing at all..

Yes gav you can! If your offered a course in august you also have to opportunity to choose between the one you have been offered now and your first or second choice! So I'd say accept you have nothing to loose !
