Need some help finding a car

I currently own a 2001 Fiat Punto and it's not the most reliable...and I'm dreading having to get it NCT'd every year now that it's 10 years old!

I have €3000 to spend and I could borrow another €1000. I'd like to get a 2004 or 2005 reg car. I like Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio and VW Polo's and Fiesta's are ok. What would be the best car to buy? And how much can I expect to pay?

My punto is a 1.2 and it does me fine so 1.2 or 1 litre would be fine. I hope a 1 litre wouldn't seem crappy cause I'm used to my punto, I've had it for 4 years..Time to say goodbye!

Any advice or other cars that are worth a look? :D

Have a look and take a drive in a Fiat Panda to see what you think.

4k will buy you a nice 2005/2006 low mileage, one owner car.

They are reliable, roomy for their size, fun, and easy to run.

Simple mechanicals. Parts and tyres etc are nice and cheap, 50mpg no problem.
    Cheap to tax and insure.

    A great little car.

Hard to fault the Ford Fiesta, my sister has one and it's a great little reliable car. Parts and servicing are reasonable and it is easy on fuel.

This one looks to be in very good condition:

Or another car worth mentioning is the Hyundai Getz, they are a little underrated, cheap to buy & run and well built:

I love Fiesta's and Getz's too. The beauty and clarity of simplified engineering equations.

Yaris would be best, Fiesta and Polo ok, stay clear of the Clio !!

The getz is a nice under rated car. I just sold an ibiza that was crazy reliable the whole time I had it.

you mentiom that you want an 04-05 reg, remember that maintainance/milage matter a lot more than year. Better to get a little driven great condition 00 than a 08 with a burned out clutch

Crazy good, or crazy bad ? Model, year, miles ?

I don't want another Fiat so that rules out the Panda. I don't really like the look of the Getz... Really leaning towards a Yaris! Think they're gorgeous.. Very expensive though!

Some of the have had quite a few owners? Is that bad?

I'm in a similar position to the op (€3-€4k to spend), have seen 2 Clio's that look lovely, low mileage and most importantly in my price range, but I noticed someone said to steer clear, are they unreliable??
I have a punto and have had a lot of trouble with it so want to stay away from fiat's also don't want to go any higher than 1.3 litre. I'm thinking Fiesta, Clio, Corsa and would like 04 or newer. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

A lot of people have recommended Fiesta's or Yaris to me! They're the only 2 that have had no complaints against them

crazy good, did everything asked of it. started every day even in the freeze, carried kayaks all over the country and went up plenty of steep hills.

1l 3door 2000 and sold with about 140k. I fully admit though i sold it due to it needing a new clutch. but at that mileage i think it probably earned the 300 quid

I have a 04 Clio and it never gives any trouble, my aunt has had a lot of Clio's (got her first in the 80's and swears by them) also with little or no trouble.
They are lovely to drive, and very cheap to run, I changed from a Fiesta and noticed a difference in running costs. Mines a 5 door and reasonably big inside (fits four teens and two dogs, plus me and assorted baggage). I've driven a Yaris and they are nice enough, but the Fiesta would be my second choice, Polo would be last purely because I don't like them(looks and inside).
With any car you can be unlucky, just look carefully.

You will pick up a current model Clio on your budget. It's one of the better cars Renault make.

Id be wary of a cavan reg yaris with a tow bar for sale on the other end of the country.
No arguing with that price though.

I put a deposit on a 2005 Yaris Strata with 4100miles on it today. Going to end up paying €5500 but I don't mind because it's a beautiful car...like new. Picking it up on Tuesday when I get the money all sorted...can't wait!:D:D

Best of luck with the new motor. Glad you held out for a nice one. What colour is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 654 ✭✭✭sparkle_23

It's kind of a silver colour... grey I suppose! An old lady had it from new, she's getting an automatic now. The interior is perfect the original mats have rubber mats over them and she has newspapers over those mats to stop it from getting dirty... a bit odd but it leaves me with a very clean car! :D

    Quick silver I'd say

I've actually never seen a Yaris strata in that colour oddly enough.

What year? Assuming 05-06 I hope its been serviced a few times in its life.

so you held out for an old model.. interesting. seems in really good nick still for 5.5k you could probably get a decent 07 nearly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 654 ✭✭✭sparkle_23

I think that's the colour :) I prefer the older shape to the 2006 one and I like all the extras that come with the strata. Yeah it has been serviced a couple of times and everything seems perfect with it

I picked it up this evening and I'm in love with it! It's gorgeous to drive and everything about it is just perfect :D:D I'm glad I waited for what I wanted

Congrats on the new car *sparkle* it's gorgeous and thanks to everyone for the advice.
Just wondering if I go from a 1.2 litre to a 998cc Yaris will I notice a huge difference in the power of the car?

I had a 2001 1.2 Fiat Punto and I notice no difference between it and the Yaris! The Yaris is way nicer to drive, it's real nippy too! :D I'd think it was a 1.2 if I didn't know any different! The pedals are further apart than on the Punto but I got used to it after about 10mins!
