Hi all, I'm off to Berlin for a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? I might also hire a car and travel outside as I don't think I'll enjoy the city for 2 weeks. Dresden and Leibzig were recommended. What suggestions for the city and outside? Thanks! JC

    Surroundings:
    By train:
Spreewald - take a boat tour on the canals. It's touristy, but the scenery is truely magic.

    By S-Bahn:
Potsdam - castles, palaces and gardens, and historic quarters.

    By car:
Usedom island - just a couple of hours from Berlin, with endless sandy beaches at the Baltic sea, forests and stunning architecture.

    In Berlin:
Too much to recommend, don't know what you're into.
    My personal favourites:
    Kreuzberg along the canal
Türkenmarkt (Turkish market) on Maybachufer (Kreuzberg) every Friday
Bergmannstraße in Kreuzberg (loads of lovely restaurants and cafés)
Winterfeldtmarkt (colourful market; Schöneberg) on Saturday
    Flea Market in Charlottenburg
Boat tour on the river Spree (from Mitte district)
    Museums, plenty of them
    Theatre, shows, opera

    I can definitely recommend:

    Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp in Oranienburg
    Stettin (Szczecin) in Poland

    both very accessible by train

Definitely make a trip out to Potsdam - it is a really nice place to chill out.

'Checkpoint Charlie' is always worth a visit, they have a museum over there with some stunning exhibitions about a vital part of German history.
