TV shows and boxsets

Bit of a technical question. There was a good thread over in Film forum and a point was made about TV boxsets

Take Game of Thrones for example.
If you don't have HBO or Sky Atlantic, going to the internet is realy your only option.

Now Series 1 is over so why is the boxset not ready to go? Not even a date on amazon yet.
The public will pay for it and for extra content about locations, the producers, background info and so on.
Once you design it once and put it into production then that's it, it's a money spinner

Same for 24. The boxsets came four to five months after the series was over. Same again for shows like Friday Night Lights. Would be shown by NBC and then about four months to the boxset.

My question is why do the producers and studio wait months and months to get the boxset out? Money can be made from the boxset and best to sell it while the show is fresh and remembered by viewers.

Is it to due to selling the show to different networks?

no, mainly its about generating interest for the next upcoming season of the show, like 24 always released its dvds around christmass cause the show returned every year in january, chuck, how i met your mother, the big bang theory will all release in september, and return soon after,

other shows are a bit odd at times to i think, like the walking dead released in march, which is weird caue it finnished on december and isnt back till october,

but mostly from what i can figure its about generating interest in the upcoming season,
