Question for NUIG students!

I'm starting my L.C year in September and after the year I want to go to NUIG(only college that I really want to attend). Problem is, some people from my secondary school that I really want to move on from, are planning on going there too. I've been looking forward to getting out of school and starting fresh in college so I would really hate to be running into these people nearly every day for 4 more years...

So my question; are there people you went to sec. school with that ended up going to NUIG(in a different course)? Do you see them alot? I'm worried about stuff like the cantene, nights out etc. Are there many activities where the entire year is involved.

    Alright that's it, thanks.

Hi eiramM. I have to say yes, you probably will see them a lot. I tend to see the same people all the time around college, though at this stage most the people who were around my age in my secondary school who went to NUIG have gone by now (I'm a soon leaving postgrad).
It kind of depends what ye are doing, what courses I mean. If you're doing something like engineering you might spend all your time up in the new engineering building whereas the arts students will be down around the concourse and arts millennium building mainly, so you may not bump into each other much on campus.
But Galway is tiny and you end up recognising half the people you pass on the street eventually. There was a time, around my final year in my undergrad that I couldn't walk down shop street without bumping into 3 or 4 people I knew. And on nights out I was guaranteed to bump into somebody I knew.
So yes, you will probably see them. But don't be discouraged you'll like Galway. And to be honest you'll make new friends and there'll be so many new people around you probably won't care about seeing those people any more.
Despite being totally sick of college and even Galway (8 years is enough!) at this stage I've still loved my time here, it's a great little city.
What do you plan on doing? Are you from far away?

    HI EiramM,
my advice is make your decision based on your career path and where you want to go and don't let anyone else put you off. You might see them around but there will also be thousands of others in Nuig and Gmit also you just have to chat to new people and not be worried about those other people.

Life is too short to remain friends with anyone because of circumstances, as mean as it might feel at the time.

    Hey OP.
I stayed in the same Student Accommodation as ones from the Secondary school and I managed to not see them at all! I wanted to make a clean break and NUIG for me was perfect! You make so many new friends through your course and societies etc.

Just be open to new things and throw yourself into everything. All first years are in the same boat.

    Hope that helps.

    Like the others said.

It's likely you will bump into some people from secondary school, but NUIG has over 17,000 students, you shouldn't bump into them too often and it doesn't mean you have to converse with them, ignore even if you wish. As long as you are all not doing the same course you should be fine!

There is also plenty of other outlets for meeting a great bunch of new people during your time in NUIG, like Clubs and Societies, random stuff the Students' Union puts on, the radio station Flirt FM, your actual course and of course drinking too =) (Just make sure to take some actual time to learn some stuff too, seriously. The courses aren't that hard with even a little bit of work and repeating a year(s) sucks balls.)

Galway does seem to have some manner of highly skewed probability of meeting people around town, it's near impossible not to see at least one person you know on any trip about after a year or so! Depending on the type of nightlife you want to be into, Galway has plenty of different places. CP's if you want to be one of the Jersey Shore crew, Carbon if you're a bit rough around the edges, Hole in the Wall if you're in Leaving Cert, Roisin Dubh if you're a bit of an indie/hipster head, Sally Long's if you're a metal head, Dignity if you have a bit of LGBT to ya, Java if you want to drink coffee and listen to people playing piano until 4 in the morning, Muddy Mahers if you're into a bit of blues/jazz, Salthouse if you are a fan of every type of beer ever, Massimo for the salsa, Blue Note for darts and a bit o' techno... the list goes on =)

The city itself has plenty more to offer than drinking too, with at least 4 theatres, 2 cinemas, a million and one sports clubs for whatever you're into, a chess club, a hackerspace, plenty of different types of dance to learn, music, etc.

Galway is pretty ****ing awesome, screw the people from your school, the world is a big place after the little stress nucleus that is second level education.

    =)

The odds are some of those people will repeat, some will change their mind, some won't get the points and some will drop out in 1st year...

You will tend to see the same people around, but I know that there are people from school i've only came across once maybe...

3 people from my school did the same course as me (undenominated science) yet i hardly saw them at all. there were a few "hi how are you" at the start, but unless you want to remain friends, you'll rarely talk to them again.

Unless you really hate these people, then you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

I met nearly all of the people I went to school with in NUIG by chance. Maybe you'd just be on the corridor and say hello, or maybe you'd have a conversation with them. Anyways, you might find that they're nicer than you thought when you talk to them individually.

I'm from Mayo. I just started doing some research on courses online, as I didn't give it too much thought until now, and really liked the film studies with arts and creative writing with arts courses. No other colleges in Ireland do anything like them. I've also stayed in Galway a few times before and loved it, so no where else really appeals to me other than Letterkenny.. but there's no courses there that I'm interesed in.

I have another while to go 'til I've to decide anyway. Thanks for the replies, they've helped alot :)

The fact that you're considering Arts mights help, as the amount of people in th course is massive so you might not see them that much. Still though even if you do see them you can always just ignore them ;) they might think you're a bit of a prick but sure if you don't like them you shouldn't care what they think of you ;)

Thankfully the d!ckheads can mostly be avoided at third level. You're not expected to stay in a classroom environment and will meet so many other new and wonderful people.

Even when you intend to keep in with the peeps from secondary schools, it's inevitable that people naturally go their own ways.

Sounds interesting, but a word of warning, don't do film studies or creative writing unless that's what you really really want to do or what you really really like. Although it's arts so you will have to do 4 subjects.

Creative writing is a lot higher points wise than the normal course as far as I can see and in first year the 4 subjects are more than enough without adding another one on on top of that...

In my experience at nuig, unless you are on the same course as the people from your school, you wont see them very often. Smokies or the College bar most likely! I freakin love Galway tho :)
