    It's mutual - I have to participate appropriately to benefit appropriately.

    Neither and both.

    If you wish take anything from society, you must also give to it, and visa versa.

    If you opt out (which is pretty uncommon and hard to do), then you don't 'owe' anything.

    It's like anything in life;
    Give as much as you take.

    The highlighted section caught my eye because I was thinking about it the other day. Can anyone really escape from society, I mean will they be allowed to leave and live their lives however they see fit without "society" sticking their nose in.

    If for example I was to move to the West and live in a stone cottage, not claiming any benefits or relying on others for my own wellbeing is is right that I am still bound by certain laws that are designed supposedly to look after the greater good?

    we owe ourselves dignity

    the individual will know themselves whether her/she acted with dignity in life given the cards they were dealt.

    Don't think of it in terms of 'owing.' Think of it in terms of 'contributing.' The more connected you feel to a certain society the more likely you are to contribute to it and want it to flourish. The less connected you feel, the more likely you are to not care too much - or even resent 'society.'
