Replacing Guitar Strings

    Hi folks

My dad played the guitar for years but he has become unwell recently and is no longer able to play as well as he once could. I never showed an interest in music when I was younger, but I would now like to learn so I can play for him (I will never be as good, but I think it would be really nice.)

That's the backround, He gave me his guitar just the other day and I need to get the strings replaced. As I am a complete beginner I have no clue how to do this. Does anyone know anyway in the North Dublin / Swords area that I could get the job done?

    Thanks
    J

There's a music shop in Swords village...I'm sure they'd restring the guitar for you. You could also have a look on YouTube...there's bound to be tons of videos showing how to do it...it's worth knowing how to do it cos you'll break a string one day and need to change it.

    Acoustic

    Electric

Videos are at the bottom of the page - would recommend you get a string winder to make it a bit easier

you could give it a go yourself after looking at tutorials, but i suggest going to a music shop, preferably a smaller one so they can restring it there and then while you watch and can ask some q's

What type of guitar is it? If it's an electric you will need to know the gauge of the strings before putting them on.. as the intonation will be affected..

If you're planning on taking up the guitar properly, you will need to know how to change the strings yourself.. So you would be better off getting somebody to SHOW you how to do it, rather than dropping in the guitar and picking it up with new strings...

    Agreed with the above.

I wouldn't just do it yourself the first time -- main reason being that you'll end up breaking a string, and then having to go and buy another one/set :)

Nothing more annoying than getting excited about finally replacing your strings, going home, and snapping one when you're stringing it up! :( Heartbreak!!!
