I'm looking for a new laptop myself and have decided on the same two you have identified (or possibly the Lenovo upgraded to 6GB RAM for £320 on saveonlaptops.co.uk)

TBH i'm leaning towards the Samsung as it has the newer i3 380M processor and a HDMI out port. Also the screen is a HD screen so should be that bit better.

Lenovo is a little cheaper but with the older (but still perfectly acceptable) Pentium P6200 chip.

Power requirements is lower with the i3 processor & chipset so battery life will be better.

Anybody got an opinion on this Samsung R540 before I go ahead? Bear in mind it's costing me £302 (inc shipping) (ex VAT)...

Yeah, I'd go for the i3 over the Pentium P6200, it's newer tech, HDMI out, etc.

If you buy the i3 the laptop will last you a good 5 years. With the pentium you'll get less then 2 before you'll have to replace it I'd say as it'll be too slow. Plus you really should have a HD screen as standard these days. As always though you get what you pay for.

I'd be wanting an i3 at least at this stage. Considering the price difference, i think it's a no brainer to go with the higher spec machine.

Also regarding one having a 'HD' screen, they both have the exact same resolution screen. Just FYI Lenovo just use the technically correct term 'WXGA' when describing theirs. Pet hate of mine when marketing apply 'HD' randomly to products

In the above mentioned case they are actually references to resolution.

HD or more specifically 720p = 1280×720 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720p


You are right that HD when referencing TV video modes does actually mean more than just the resolution. This type of naming structure is a mess but that is what you get for involving marketing people into technical stuff... Like hard disks that are sold by sizes that do not match the real size...

Anyone of these, you can't go wrong. Just bought g570 myself, great machine. Lenovo are IBM by the way. A good make with a good rep.

I'd advise buying off Amazon too. Free delivery for anything over £25, they are more or less as cheap as anyone, I think saveonlaptops have these for a tenner less but then they add a 1.5% surcharge at checkout.
