Pig ‘n’ Porter is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. There will be 120 teams comprising of some 1800 players.

It really is a great event for the city, providing a lot of funds for businesses in the city with I expect a lot of hotel rooms to be booked out as teams from around the city, county and country, and from further afield to descend on the city - some say its worth 10 million to the city ;)

This year the charity partner is St. Gabriels School, http://www.stgabriels.ie/ based in Dooradoyle, Limerick, provides education and a range of therapy services to children and young adults with physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities and developmental delay.

This year's event schedule is as follows:

Nation). Tickets available from Ticketmaster followed by… late – ridiculously late the legendary welcome party in
Peter Clohessy’s bar & The Sin Bin.

Are they gonna have that stupid queue for vouchers then queue for drinks shenanigans again this year? Really annoying last year!

I ended up with a couple of those vouchers in my pocket the next day. Mind you, I found a number of them on the ground :D

It took forever as well to get a taxi out of the place at the end of the night.

Just to update, ten euro tickets are still available for purchase. On the drink vouchers:
    * A drinks voucher system will be in operation from 16:00 on Saturday. There will be a number of bars where the vouchers can be redeemed.

    * HAPPY HOUR. Between 18:00 and 20:00, you can redeem 2 vouchers for 3 drinks.

    * ALL DAY: Buy 10 drink vouchers and get one free token.

Bandits gig has been moved to Dolans to accommodate the demand for tickets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,097 ✭✭✭✭zuroph

Was wondering why it got shifted.

    Is this correct:

€10 for tickets from O'Dwyers pub

€15 for tickets at the gate on Saturday

If so, thats a load of shit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,015 ✭✭✭✭Mc Love

Its €10 from anyone selling tickets before Saturday. Why is it a load of shit??
Bandits gig has been moved to Dolans to accommodate the demand for tickets.

I can tell you that isnt the exact reason!

It could well be - did you ring Dolans and find out?

No not yet...might actually pop down there as its only down the road.

Even if it isn't sold out yet I would think plenty will arrive on the night to pack it out.

Thats what people are saying, apparantly only 45 sold.... I would imagine that a rugby field with marquees has a slightly larger capacity than Dolans!!!

Not having a dig at you, but how many rugby related festivals/events, not including actual rugby games, actually take place in Limerick?

Don't think there are that many.

If any other sporting organisation organised an event with alcohol being promoted as one of the central themes there would be a huge outcry over it. It's grand for rugby though.

Heineken Cup, Magners League, Pig N Porter, Bull N' Booze.........................

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant :)

Guinness Hurling Championship, Carling Cup, Carlsberg sponsoring Liverpool, Johnnie Walker Cup, Bud Light Nascar, I'm sure there's more, just can't think of any at the moment, just watching Come Dine With Me (shoot me now)

Yes and we often do we hear people giving out about the GAA having Guinness sponsoring the hurling yet there is never a peep about rugby sponsorship.

There was no problem with Munster players knocking back cans of cider on stage in front of hundreds of children at their home coming after the Heineken Cup.

I've seen far more GAA players twisted after games than Rugby players, spot most home comings for GAA teams and the players (who drink) will all have had a few. The fact of the matter is most sports need sponsorship and will take whatever's going (Snooker/F1 and cigarettes for example)

I would be very surprised if you could produce a picture of a GAA home coming where the players were drinking cans on stage.

Where does the sponsorship aspect come into titles like "Pig N Porter" and "Bull N Booze"?

Anyways I sound like a "somebody think of the children merchant here" :D

Pig N Porter is an over rated, pointless festival.

Limerick needs to start organising more events in the city centre with mass appeal, not obscure, rugby related festivals in the suburbs.

So anybody running a festival has to run it by "Limerick" first?

Why don't you give Limerick a call and put your ideas to it.

I think 4,000 people would argue against the festival being called 'obscure'. If your partying needs are not being catered for then I suggest you bring your own ideas to the table and not have a swipe at people who clearly put a lot of effort into what is now permanent a fixture in the sporting calendar.

Sigh... might explain why there are no decent festivals.

Is 4,000 supposed to be impressive? Waterford hosted a tall ships race which managed to attract well over 500,000 people. Galway pulls festivals out of its arse, with three major festivals over the next few weeks which will attract at least 100,000 people with the Races alone, not to mention the Arts Festival and Oyster Festival.

Is a tent in a field with a pig and some tag rugby really the best you've got? People have more to offer at a communion party.

When you come up with something to attract those numbers to Limerick then you will have grounds to criticize the tent in the field. Just another case of someone trying to rain on other peoples parade, teams came from as far as Toulouse, France to take part so hats off to the PnP crew in my opinion.

If 500,000 people atteneded the event where would they play the actual rugby? :pac:

Besman has a point, although I do think the PnP is a great little event. More festivals etc need to be organised for Limerick City to attract more visitors. Galway is absolutely thriving because there seems to be some sort of festival or event on pretty much once a month. Riverfest, Mardi Gras (Despite its faults), and the Pig n Porter are a good start but more is needed. Maybe an events committee or office needs to be setup to look into this?

Isn't that what the Limerick co-ordination office is suppose to try and achieve? could be wrong...

Don't think so, this info was taken from their website:

The Limerick Communications Office works with partners across the city to promote its key attributes, raise its profile and enhance and inform perceptions.
Limerick has a very solid foundation from which to promote its undoubted attractions. The goal is to communicate and showcase the city’s core strengths and bring them to a wider audience.
Raising a positive profile of Limerick will impact on the local economy, our image and encourage more people to visit the city and experience all that is good about it.

Instead of adding to the point, you took the lame position of questioning the use of Limerick in my post. By Limerick, I am referring to the wider community, the Councils, etc. who appear to have very little ideas in the way of festivals and events to attract people back into the city in the same way that Galway, Cork and Waterford do.

Now you might add an opinion like a good lad.

But when a sporting club takes it upon themselves to organise a fairly big event you are very quick to run them down?
The Tall Ships was a once off for Waterford. Waterford doesn't have much else going for it in terms of drawing a crowd to the city, no proper stadiums, no concert venue etc.

I'd agree more could be done in Limerick, especially surrounding the very lame Riverfest, but running down existing festivals doesn't encourage people to go out and create new ones. Galway is in a league of it's own when it comes to festivals and really is the bench mark for others cities to aim for.

The tag competion took place over a number of weeks, the car park seemed quite busy every night i passed with multiple teams playing on the pitches and many more watching, certainly for all of July.

I attended on the last night (really just for the session) and had a fantastic time, i thought it was very very well run. When i stumbled out to get a taxi home at 12.30 there were still people arriving from town.

Well done lads and feck the begrudgers!

And we are the European City of Sport for 2011....so I think it was very fitting!! If people are complaining there's no arts/film/food festivals, go about organising one!!
