Best indoor terrestrial aerial

I am thinking of getting the saorview box but I don't have an outdoor aerial. It says on the site that "In strong signal areas an indoor aerial should do fine. ... but that isn't very reassuring.
I won't be able to put one on the roof or in the attic but I was thinking of one of those Amplified Antennas might work? I saw some here but don't know which one is the best:http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/10210/xx/xx/12/3/criteresn.html

All indoor aerials are fundamentally inferior rubbish so my advice is if you can insert a wire coat hanger into the aerial socket and get away with it then fine. Otherwise a really simple aerial (looks like a minature version of an outdoor aerial) is ok but a bent coat hanger might give the same results.

Don't waste your money on expensive amplified aerials!

A bent coat hanger into the aearial socket on the TV? Are you serious? I doubt if that would work with saorview.

It does if the signal is good enough in your area. If you want to try a indoor aerial go to you local 2 euro shop and get one there. If it doesn't work then more than likely none will work. You could try it in the attic running a cable down to the TV, in general this will give you more success. However the best and recommended method is using a proper aerial on the roof. Personally I've an outdoor aerial in my attic and it work fine as does a cheap set of rabbit ears but I wouldn't recommend that setup to anybody as it may not work.

It's the indoor location that's 'fundamentally rubbish'.

How does telling someone to stick a coat hanger in their aerial socket qualify as 'advice'?

To the OP, here's one of the simple outdoor (Yagi) type aerials that people are so fond of mentioning.

Hi lukin - I used the above indoor aerial until recently. I now have a freesat dish (and got an outdoor aerial put up at the same time as the dish). The indoor aerial worked perfectly for me. I just connected the aerial to the TV, plugged in the aerial, and put it beside the window nearest the tv. I live in Dublin City centre. I had no problems with interference etc.

I still have the indoor aerial if you want to try it. Just PM me!

You can get a indoor UHF aerial in the €2 shops now.

It's a cheap way of seeing if it will work indoors for you.

A coathanger is normally far worse than even those cheap indoor aerials purely because of the arbitrary shape of it. It depends on how it's bent but for various reasons (different aspects of physics and electronics) you could see effects like one channel/multiplex working reasonably well while another multiplex won't work at all. The level of ghosting on analogue will vary wildly from channel to channel. (The ghosting exists with digital TV too but it's much harder to detect the extent of it).

The cheap aerials in the €2 shops are as good a start as any. There's also guides on the net to make your own aerial which can be hidden behind a sofa or in a wardrobe or attic if you have one. They work better than the €2 rabbits ears. If you do have an attic though, you can buy a proper TV aerial for €15 and put it up there.

I've had far better results from coat hangers than indoor aerials but it all depends on far you are from the transmitter and if you can actually see the mast from your location.

The only indoor aerial giving me great signal is an amplified one for all.

Despite numerous assertions from the aerial gestapo, it delivers Saorview seamlessly for a fraction of the cost/hassle an outdoor yagi would have necessitated.

It may be an immeasurably inferior option from a technical standpoint, but as long as it delivers Saorview seamlessly and consistently, most folks simply won't care.
