tandem pump

Hi all. There seems to be an oil leak from the back of the tandem pump (think thats whats it called). Its on the right hand side of the engine block when you look in from the front of the car, right over the gearbox. I was under the car the other day and noticed an oil weep down along the back of the block. It looks to be coming from over the exhaust manifold. I can't see any leaks around the rocker cover gasket. There is a small bit of dried up oil caked on the pump.

I have read that these can go. I also read that they can fail and let diesel into the oil but i can't smell diesel off the dipstick. Is there any other way of checking? I hope its just the gasket/seal!

Also can i remove the pump to see is the coming from the back of it, or is there a special way of removing it? Dose it affect the timing or anything?

The oil level had dropped a small bit but nothing major and I just allowed it was because it was due a service..

Any info on this or anything else that could be causing the leak would be appreciated.

Car is a seat leon mk1 150bhp tdi

    Cheers

    Sean

If there is a pump issue then its usually oil that gets into the returned fuel blackening the diesel,
Diesel in the sump is more likely injector orings/damaged head.
You can remove the pump easily as its not timed, you might want to get a gasket for between it and the head before you rip, 10 mins work on a golf.

cheers for that. i took the pipes off the diesel filter but the diesel dose not look blackened. would probaly have to empty it into something to be sure?? i have a new gasket ordered so hopefully that will stop the oil leak
