Where a good place in Dublin for cheap large fish tanks?

OK, This is my very first topic on this site and i need to know where to get one fast because there's this 125g tank at my LFS down in crumby ol' town Wicklow at a cheap 600 Euro including stand and all and there is another interested as well as me in buying the tank so if i know and don't find any large, reasonably good tank fast, i will know before he/she buys/pays off some of the tank price. I have been to Aquatic village in Brittas and Pet Smart (I think that's the name) in Carrickmines. Aquatic Village has reasonable prices but nearly all there tanks are more less suited for saltwater reef tanks in a way that they are all in a square shape and Pet Smart's tanks are just to way small. I would be looking for a
150g - 300g tank. Any ideas? Any would be helpful, Thanks

:pac: Ha, I needed to do that...

150 - 300g as in gallons? Are you sure you don't mean litres?

Yes, I do mean 'G' as in gallons. Big tank, Ha. I want something big, something different than my 20g planted tank and my 7g clownfish tank. LOL, if i got a 300g tank for a very decent price the first thing i would get would definitely be a RTC.
Anyway, Any suggestions on the tank?

Bejayney. Right, I'd recommend Seahorse Aquariums in Ballymount, or Maidenhead Aquatics in Carlow (in the Arboretum).

However 125gal for 600 euro is cheap as chips man, I paid 700 for a new 300L (yes, L) Juwel with stand, and I got a bargain at that!

I know Seahorse were selling a 7 foot Clearseal full kit, pumps filters, lights, heaters, for 1600, down from 2,600. It was a split aquarium though.

I see... Very expensive from what i see from the site. Any others? If i got the 125g tank it would look terrible with 2 Oscars in it. Not a huge amount of fish besides bottom-feeders that would be big enough and compatible with the O's and also would also be small enough to live in a 125g tank peacefully. It would be amazing to get a cichlid tank and it would be interesting to watch them as adults but they are just such very, very boring fish as juveniles, There not as active and there not as colorful etc.... Anyway, any other stores/sites that you know of?

You could try www.donedeal.ie or www.gumtree.ie or www.irishfishkeepers.com people are always flogging tanks on those sites. I was offered a 400 L with stand for 120 euro a while back.

Right well, Gumtree and Donedeal had plenty of tanks to offer but the biggest i could find was a 170g tank, nothing as big as i'm trying to find.
Ha, i saw this guy selling a tank on gumtree and also selling his 2 zebra plecos. There pretty rare fish, they sell for over 300 Euro in stores:eek:. Anyway,
I know this is going sound like a stupid question but i am not sure if that tank in my local fish is actually 125g's. The guy there said the tank was 250L's,
but i used the online converter and it said 66g's?

Why don't you get one custom made. Ask at your fish shop, they normally know someone that makes them. You could get an aquarium to your exact requirements.

You could try make one yourself?

I myself would be very aprehensive having 300g of water upstairs in something i made myself but if you are anyway DIY oriantated making a tank looks very easy.

    Check out monsterfishkeepers.com for tips.

You do know that a 300 gallon tank is well over 1300 litres of water.

You are aware of the size of tank it would take to hold that amount of water??

And also the total combined weight of such a full tank and the stability of the floor that its going to sit on.

And especially putting it upstairs too, thats getting into structural and load bearing issues on the floor and joists below.Basicly you are putting the weight of a family car upstairs on the floor.

    Asking for ALOT of trouble,imo.

P.S-You would also need an external filter (most likely 2 external filters) and a sump (smaller tank under the main tank) setup to manage and filter/flow 1300 litres of water.A tank setup of this size is going to cost alot of money to buy, even 2nd hand it will cost alot and will take a lot of effort maintain too.

This is a serious setup and needs alot of maintanance and cleaning.

I also think you mean Petstop and not "petsmart".

I bought a 500 litre Clearseal tank from Petstop in Swords and I have to tell you that its plenty big enough (6 foot long and 5 feet high) and it holds allot of fish.Runs with an Eheim external filter setup and Pro-Flora Digital CO2 injection system.

Are you sure you are not getting your tank and water volumes not mixed up???

OK people. I am very sorry for my absence on this forum for about 2 weeks. Anyway, back to the question. Everyone seems so shocked that I am looking for a 300g tank, Yes, It's large, Very large but you are all acting like it's an insane idea, I do truly care for my tanks i would be able take care of it, When I first got into fish my first idea was wanting 2 Oscars and some other fish as peacock bass' and lets say a Red Tail Catfish (RTC),
(by the way, I know that list is too big for a 300g since you need 300g's for 1 RTC)
Now obviously i could not do it due to the fact a lone (Adult) Oscar would not even be able to fit into a 20g let alone survive in it. I like the idea of building a tank but I was talking to a glass specialist and he told me about his 'Home-made' Tank shattering in a test seeing would the tank sustain the water. Is this common in as i say 'Home-Made' tanks? I know custom tanks can be less expensive but still...
A tank that size (Even custom) is Expensive, I found the least amount of money paid for the materials (Including glass) was around 800-900 Euro. Anyone have any tips or experience in building custom tanks they can share with me? Thanks.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,698 Mod ✭✭✭✭Silverfish

Well, really a RTC shouldn't be in a 300 gallon tank either, as they can grow to 5 feet long. But on average they grow to 3 feet, and a long - type 300 gallon aquarium will only be roughly 8 feet long, it's still too small.

Anyway, your best bet is clearseal, if you want to buy one, it would have to be a custom order but I'd say it's fairly standard for them.

If you want to make one yourself, I've no clue. It would be nearly 1.5 ton weight, so it'd want to be thick glass and well sealed.

It really was. If it hadn't been for the partition, it would be in my sitting room right now.

    .

Given that 1 litre of water weighs about 1kg the weight of the water not including the weight of the tank would be 214 stone or almost 3000 lbs.

I checked out Clearseal.com and i could not find a tank anywhere near to the size I'm looking for and It was not a huge website, There was only some different shapes and sizes of tanks on it, What would also be a good site for Very large fish tanks? Thanks for the reply.

I think if you read the thing page you would know, Excuse me if I'm sounding like I'm trying to be smart but I did make it very clear to what tank size I want, And i Have checked out all of the sites the members have posted on the topic and Have been to multiple shops looking for a tank of that size, Sadly, The biggest i found was a 75g tank, It was too small.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,698 Mod ✭✭✭✭Silverfish

75 gals is only 280 litres or so, there's plenty of shops that will sell bigger tanks than that

If you phone up Seahorse Aquariums, or Aquarium Solutions, or whoever else, and tell them what you want and ask them to quote you on it, you'll get prices.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,656 ✭✭✭norrie rugger

I doubt that you will get a standard tank that size, in Ireland, as the market is just not there. There are custom builders that have been suggested, in this thread, that are your beat bet.
    Otherwise there is ebay

give fins, fur, feathers a call on 8079247. They'll get you a clearseal built in any size you want. clearseal won't deal with you direct. you will probably pay upwards of two grand for it, possibly closer to three.

Thanks, I'll ring up Seahorse Aquariums tomorrow and ask them about what tank sizes they have and if they don't have the one I'm looking for then I'll ask them about ordering a custom tank. Do they mostly do more larger tank than small ones?
