Help - Car Import VAT

I think I have really screwed up. I just bought a car in the UK which is over 6 months old but only has a few hundred miles on the clock. Its an ex demo which has the Dealer as the first owner. It was registered in Dec 2010.

As I understand it (I only found this out today), it will be classed as a new car by the Revenue as it has under 6000km on the Clock (even though it is over six months old) and I will be charged VAT as well as the VRT. I have already paid the Dealer in the UK via electronic transfer and his invoice included VAT.

I have 30 days to clear this car with the Revenue once I bring it into the State. Am I going to end up paying VAT twice on the car ???

could you ask the dealer to drive a few miles before picking it up ;)
or indeed you drive a few miles before VRT'ing it?

Seriously, presumably I could not be expected to pay VAT twice on the same item in two different countries.

Can I claim the UK VAT back ? Has anyone done this and how do you go about it ?

Yes you can claim back uk VAT once you provide evidence of having paid VAT here.

What you really should have done is filled form (VAT 411 I think) at the garage and this alllows you to take the car from the UK VAT free and then you pay VAT here. I realise you thought you were dealing with a car over 6 months old so this didnt concern you.

Does the uk car receipt have mileage on it? If you could get it without mileage recorded, you could get the miles over 6k km before you go to vrt it.

There is another thread on here that suggests you would get an 11 reg if vrted under new means of transport rules. I dont know how accurate that is though.

Thanks for that. I know about the VAT 411 form now but didn't when I bought the car. Kind of an impulse buy, wasn't over there looking for a car or anything.

Actually it was more an impulse buy by the Mrs, the car is for her. I just picked up the tab. At least I thought I was picking up the tab !!

Just contact the uk revenue and see how you go about claiming back VAT on the car once you have proof of Irish VAT payment. There should not be a problem. After all, you dont have to pay VAT twice.

Does the invoice show the mileage?

Yes, the invoice has the mileage on it. I may have to do a Ferris Bueller, except I'll be trying to add miles on !!!

I think if the miles are shown on the invoice, it may be no use running up miles now. Im open to correction on that though.
Worst case - you have to claim VAT back from uk after paying here.

Has anyone succesfully claimed car VAT back from the UK in circumstances like these ? If so, how painful was it ?

    Hi Jok_jetset

I am after doing the exact same thing as yourself and am in the same position. Just wondering how did you get on in the end??? Pay VAT and claim UK VAT back.....or do a Ferris Bueller!?
