I plan on buying a used car soon. Hope to spend around €6000. I'd like to get a car thats maybe 2006 or newer and not too big an engine, 1.4 or 1.6 litre possibly?

The cars I was looking at most was the Ford Focus, Opel Astra or VW Golf. I've heard that a 1.4L engine on a Focus or Golf is not really that powerful. Correct me if I'm wrong. If anyone has any experience with these cars I'd love to hear it.

I was also thinking of going for the 3 door versions of the cars. Any reason for getting 5 door instead of the 3? I dont think I'll be bringing many passengers and I always prefer the look of 3 doors.

These were just a few cars I had in mind. If you can think of other similar cars that I might be missing I'd appreciate it, along with any advice!

    Thanks in advance.

Kia proCee'd worth a look. More powerful thany you mentioned and even early ones should have lots of warranty left

Seems a bit over my budget. Should I look at cars before 2006 as well do you think?

Do all 2006+ cars have kilometer speedometers by the way?

2005 onwards have kms. A focus is probably the best all-rounder tbh.

    the 1.6

Would you recommend the petrol or diesel?

Petrol will have a bit more poke, 1.6 is a bit small for diesel methinks. Though if your doing a good bit of distance driving, fuelling a diesel is cheaper

Well it seems I'm looking at either a 1.6 Petrol Ford Focus or 1.4 Petrol Opel Astra. I prefer the look of the astra but it seems the focus performs better, am I right?

How much should I be looking to spend on a 3 door version of either of these cars? I've seen a couple of figures but I'm not sure if they're asking too much or asking too little!

    Thanks.

I'd have a look at a suzuki swift. Meant to be great little cars and they always get great reviews. You could probably get the 1.6 sport within budget which is meant to be nippy enough.
