Green shoots go from strength to strength at Carlow Institute of Further Education
Agriculture and Horticulture are becoming an integral part of learning at Carlow Institute of further Education. The Institute has been providing a very popular course in Gardening & Landscaping for a number of years. Due to the success of this Horticultural course and the increasing number of career opportunities in this field the Institute decided to establish a new course. With the addition of two new staff Mr Martin Quigley and Mr James Malone it was possible to start a course in Organic Agriculture.
The course consists of eight modules some of which include Organic Production Principles, Food Crops, Alternative Farm Enterprises and Soil & Crop Production. Student timetables are divided between on site practical work in our gardens and pollytunnel alongside theoretical class work. This approach to learning gives a student not only the knowledge but also the hands on experience that is invaluable to a career in this field. Successful graduates are eligible to apply to Institutes of Technology and Universities for follow-on courses.
Martin Quigley (course coordinator) comes from an agricultural back round and studied Agricultural Science UCD and Waterford IT while James Malone has a back round in the horticultural industry and studied at Warrenstown Agricultural College and The National Botanic Gardens.
