GUI Handicap

    Hi,

I am wondering, is joining a club the only way to obtain a GUI Handicap?

I am a relatively new player, well started about a year ago but I don't get to play that often, usually around once a month. I am just starting to get a little more consistent and have broken 90 on a few occasions, best round so far was an 80 at par 70 course, haven't got close to this in a while though. I would like to obtain a handicap to get a true reflection of my ability and to be able to enter the odd open competition. However I cannot justify the fee for joining a club given how little I get to play every year. Is there any way of getting around this?

    Thanks for the help.

If you have only been playing for a year and not very often and still are shooting close to 80 then you are either extremely naturally talented or taking mulligans :p

I'm not sure about your question but with the ability you appear to have I would recommend joining a club if at all possible :)

The only way to get a GUI handicap is to join a GUI affiliated club. If you can not justify the club membership fee then look into distance membership options as these can be quite cheap. Plenty of threads on here about it.

I'd get someone to sponsor you and try to join the European tour in a few years, shooting 10 over on one of your first rounds shows some ability.... (playing a year, once a month, and it was a while ago means it must have been in your first 4 or 5 rounds so)

Get a distance handicap and play open competitions. Lots of folk on this forum dont believe in natural ability and think you have to spend hours on forums to perfect the swing.

I have loads of friends with natural ability, some for golf, some for stretching the truth. So my swing improvement doesn't correlate directly with hours spent on forums...damn... I may seek advice on them though if that's ok.

I don't know the OP and I do hope they are as good as that, slightly very envious albeit. Shooting 10 over on one of your first rounds shows an amazing natural ability and is something that seems to be wasted by only playing 10-12 times a year.

On the other hand, I think its a perfectly reasonable reaction to be dubious of posters on forums. A lot of keyboard heros appear. OP, I hope you're not, and if so, get signed up and don't waste that talent.

Slevenamon in Co. Tipp seems to offer the cheapest country membership at just under €200 afaik from this forum but I'm open to correction on that.
I normally only log onto this forum and start swinging away in front of laptop waiting for the hours to clock up :D

Thanks for the replies guys, I had taken a look at distance membership alright, cheapest I could see was Kilrush which was around €150, so maybe I just need to bite the bullet and go for it.

In response to the joining the European tour comments, thanks for the optimism. Let em clarify things a little as I don't want to seem to be making up the truth. The round of 80 was genuine with no mulligans. In truth I have been playing around a year and a half and while I say I only play once a month, this was an average estimate. In reality, I will not play from September to March, then from March to August I will play about once every 2 weeks. So I do go through a period of playing a bit but then stop for a while. I started playing in March 10 but as said didn't play at all after September. The 80 came around 2 months ago, had hit an 88 and 87 before this but haven't broken 90 since shooting the 80, very frustrating game. I think I got carried away believing I was better than I am when in reality it was probably just a lucky round. Last 3 rounds have been 93, 97 and 91. Anyway thanks for the help.

    Sour grapes

If you boys would worry about getting the little ball from the tee to the little hole rather than is my swing perfect, you would probably score much better.

Cunnin, hope you don't mind my initial skepticism. Shouldn't have gotten petty on your thread but I let myself come down to that level.
Fair play on that, that's great scoring for a newbie, very jealous.

I'm also on the look out for a club.
    Are you based in Dublin?
If so, I've narrowed it down to 2 in Dublin for myself. (Still looking at country possibility)
*Grange Castle @ €390 yearly membership but its pay to play after that, €16/€22 (weekday/end) so you'd have to factor that into it.
    *Elmgreen www.elmgreengolfclub.ie
A few different options there, it has the benefit of being linked to Corballis which I've heard is playable all year round... So, I expect to see you back here off scratch next year if you take the option up :D

No problem AJ, reading back my initial post, I would have been skeptical reading it as well, hell I was skeptical when the guy I was playing with told me I had shot it!! Still waiting to get anywhere near it again. Not in Dublin area im afraid I'm in Limerick. playing with the idea of the distance membership in Kilrush, however I'm not sure if it would work out any cheaper. As I would likely just play there the three times to get a handicap and then continue playing in the limerick area so the overall cost would not be far off membership to a local club where I could play regularly for free, ie no green fee. Charleville have a good deal at the moment 375 for new golf players, so maybe that is the best idea.

Try Blessington Lakes they have associate membership from now until March 1st 2012 for 175 euro. This entitles you to full use of the course and covers GUI subscription and card.If you are interested you can PM me.

Just incidentally, Grange Castle are offering their deal at the moment as €300 up to end of March next year, and the same pay as you play rates as far as I know

try http://todaysgolfer.golfscoretracker.co.uk you can register for 10 pound sterling. you can upload your scores and keep track of your handicap. you will also be able to print a handicap cert which they claim most clubs will accept. you can also get a handicap card up to 4 times a year with your up to date handicap on it. another benefit is you can track your stats, fir, gir, putts etc. you can print off stat cards on the site and upload the info after the round. you will get all sort of info from this similar to the stats they have on tv for the pros. you will get graphs for all your rounds, stats etc. you can see where your strong points are and where the weak ones are and you have the benefit of getting an adjusted handicap after each round without having to join any club. if you only want to see your handicap without all the stats and handicap card its free to do on the site. hope this helps

Looks like a bit of a dodgy rip off to me. All those stats you can do yourself on excel. It's also a UK site so I don't know would a dodgy self calculated UK handicap be accepted anywhere in Ireland.

Thanks samdeman, im gonna give it a try, the free version anyway, only interested in keeping a rough indication of where I am going. its good to have a way of tracking these things to see any progress or lack there of.will still consider the beginner membership I reckon though.
