Hacked?

A few nights ago, I was on my home desktop surfing forums and one post had a link to a site with free books, so I clicked the link. Only after I clicked I realised it was a deep web link (as the address was unusual) and quickly exited it before the page loaded.

Then after a few minutes, my pc got a blue screen and my home pc automatically restarted with the antivirus (Avast) disabled when it turned back on. Im afraid all my private documents on the pc were accessed.

Just wondering what you think I should do now?
Im typing this on my laptop connected to the same router, is this laptop secure or insecure because its connected to the internet via the same router (ie is it possible for a hacker to see what im typing/passwords/usernames??

very doubtful you were/are being hacked. probably just badly hit with spyware. disconnect infected laptop and run anti-spyware like malware bytes and an antivirus scanner.

I read alot of bad things about the "deep web" tho and people getting hacked. Its the home pc that I think was hacked. But am wondering about the security of m laptop as im using it now to browse the web?

I'm gonna go with Creamy Goodness on this one; don't think you were hacked.

What I would do is, go into safe mode and run an antivirus scan to see what happens. If you get results then that will probably sort it out but if not and the problem persists, then it may be time to consider that maybe you've been hacked.

again, hackers will not put the effort to hack a single pc of a nobody don't mean that in a bad way, but there are bigger fish to fry so to say.

hmm never used safe mode before will look into it. I ran a boot-time scan (Avast) and it found alot of stuff thats now in my virus chest.

Course they do, its easy for computer nerds and could steal credit card details etc?

Its far more easy to get people to just give you them. Stick a BOI logo on a nice looking email with a web link, get a couple of 100k Irish email addresses and fire off a email requesting they submit their credit card details to make sure they are not being scammed. You would get at least a couple of thousand replies or web hits.

People are morons and scamming of that magnitude is easy.

Hacking and stealing data off individual machines is pointless. You could go through thousands before you find anything remotely interesting and for the most part "valuable data" is only ever "valuable" to the one person. A hacker couldn't give two ****s about your expense reports, hardcore granny pron or donkey fetish.

    Did you do it? :(

In all seriousness tho its a scary thought of being hacked

I wouldnt be too afraid to be honest. Worst case scenario is that your PC was infected and it could be used in a Botnet and used to preform DDoS attacks or to send spam.

Most likely you hit a webpage that downloaded spyware in the background and then ran which resulted in your machine restarting so it could disable Avast.

Download Malwarebytes, it's free and can pick up bits and pieces of spyware that Avast might miss. Be sure to run it in Safe Mode.

Annoying but you wouldn't have been hacked. Most of these spyware programs are automated to coax you into paying for a fake anti-virus.

    Nothing has happened so far.
I use PC Tools Spyware Doctor and anti-virus - it gave no reaction to that site at all.
It is really slow to load. Interesting articles about picking locks.

    Thanks.
    Is that free?
    Still nothing happened?

Still nothing - I ran a scan there and nothing showed up and the PC hasn't been doing anything strange.

No, it wasn't free, but it's not madly expensive.
They might have a trial version that's free.
