RAF fighter jets were scrambled to escort a business plane into Doncaster ‘s airport, the Free Press can reveal.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon when the aircraft is believed to have changed its flight plans mid-air.

It is thought the business jet set off from Istanbul for Innsbruck but once inside Austrian airspace it cancelled its stop in Innsbruck and asked to continue to Doncaster.

The Free Press understands on entering UK airspace it was asked why it had by-passed Innsbruck and crew said they had enough fuel to make Doncaster .

Having been told it would be met by military aircraft, the plane was then routed along the North Sea coast into Robin Hood Airport by two RAF jets believed to be Typhoon jets scrambled from RAF Coningsby.

A spokesman for Robin Hood Airport, said: “We can confirm that a small business jet was escorted to land at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield by two RAF aircraft yesterday afternoon.

“The matter was subsequently dealt with by South Yorkshire Police, however this had no impact on operations or for passengers using the airport.”

I'd say this had a few heartbeats racing.

Presuming that the arrangement with the RAF is still in place, and bearing in mind the cuts that they are taking place over there, someone might well end up doing just that. :(

I wonder why it was so necessary to intercept it.

Well it does seem quite suspicious.

If they were planning on going to innsbruck, why had they enough fuel to carry them to doncaster?

Why not land in Innsbruck, then file a flight plan to Doncaster?

Plus it came from Turkey, a little to close to the Middle East for comfort i reckon.

In the end, it was probably just a grotesquely rich turkish/middle eastern business man with more money than sense... "i dont want to go to Innsbruck anymore, this place in the UK looks better, go there!"

Why on earth would anyone ever choose Doncaster of Innsbruck. Craving for Pot Noodles or some fine Ale?

Probably saw an add for a kebab shop on the internet while he was in the air selling "The best kebabs in the world".

This angered the rich turkish man, who proclaimed:

"I will show him real turkish kebab, captain, take me to this doncaster place!"

Something like that is what I was thinking

    :P

Doesnt this just show the Joke that is our national air defence? . Supposing this guy had come from morocco/mauritania area, supposed to refuel in brittany but decided to bypass on here? There is no way our PC-9s woyld have a chance of intercepting anything faster than a King Air, and even that would be dodgy as we have no GCI capability and no air to air radar in any of our aircraft .Throw in a communications cock up like last weekend over the transplant, and we would be contacting the Brits as the mushroom cloud was just starting to disapate in the breeze . But hey, if anyone asks, we have a great ministerial transport service, and we train our pilots , almost, to fast jet standards, except? oh yes we have no fast jets for them to fly. Its enough to drive you to drink .
