Small, fast, suitable for motorway miles?

    Hi there,
So I'm working in the UK, and need to replace my aging 206 with something a bit more up-to-date, comfortable and powerful. I drive about 60 miles a day, about 75% of which is motorway. My budget is about £4500, preferably something <8 years old, decent mpg and comfortable on motorways. Looking for something with a bit of character.

Unfortunately, I also need a boot and back seats so my MX5 (or any other 2-seater) idea is out the door.
I've been considering Mini Cooper (S), Alfa Romeo 147, even the Audi A2... a Fiesta ST or Clio Renaultsport would be a lot of fun but totally unsuitable for motorways from what I gather.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Particularly where to look for good value in the UK at the moment?

    Fabia vRS TDi?

The Fabia VRS is a definite contender, but those in my price bracket seem to have very high mileages. Is it a car that I should be wary of when at or around 100k miles?

The Focus looks like a safe option, but I was looking for something a bit more unusual. The UK roads are covered in Fords and Vauxhalls!

Would a Mazda3 MPS be out of the question? c. 25mpg but it fits all other requirements.

I looked up the MPS (and the Seat Cupras and several other great looking cars) but I don't think they're available within my price range. The cheapest are listed at around 6k, and I don't think even some heroic haggling will get it down to a price I can deal with....

About a diesel car, I drive a 320d for work so I know how nice a refined, modern diesel can be, can I expect similar responsiveness and performance from the Fabia or Golfs (circa 05-06)?
