Fraction in Excel

    I want to type 4½
in a cell in Excel 97. I tried copying it from a Word document but although it went in ok, it makes the cell extend. Any advice please? I don't want to put 4.5 as 4½
    is better for my project.

As you can see, putting it in here also doesn't work too well either as it also leaves a lot of space after it!

You can insert it as a symbol. Go to Insert>Symbol and scroll down until you find it. However, I don't have Excel here but I suspect that you may not be able to use this in a formula.

Just highlight the cells and click format cells and select fraction.

Thanks, but still comes out as 4 1/2. I must be doing something wrong. I have set the cells for 'text', then I typed 4 1/2, then I selected the cell and set it to 'fraction' but nothing changed.

Try it a second time. Dunno why but sometimes when you format cells in excel you need to do it twice to make it work.

Assuming the cell is unformatted, type your number as a decimal i.e. 4.5 and then format it to fraction.

    And again, 4 1/2

I'm using Excel 97, maybe it doesn't have this particular function. Time to give up I think. Thanks for your help anyway.

if you're not using it in formulas/ totals etc. to get a text representation turn on num lock, hold down alt and type 171, for 1/2 (dosnt seem to be working on boards, so may not work) or 172 for 1/4, cant do other fractions

edit, i think you may have coppied the 'new line' aswell as the ½ from word???

Omigosh that worked! Thanks so much. Where can I find more info on the other fractions? Don't know if I did copy the new line, I might have though.
