Rules of the road.... Query @ roundabout.

Coming from Dundrum heading towards the M50 - the big roundabout just there at sandyford leading out to the m50 (going southbound) - I stay in the left lane (at the lights) and move into the middle lane after the lights to lead me down to the m50 - today loads of cars where in the right lane before the lights so I assume they are going right around the roundabout and into the far right lane. But after the lights they then tried to move into the middle lane right in front of me or right beside me and very nearly caused a crash with the two cars in front (and me) ...what is the correct lane to be in? It is a bit confusing = 2 lanes go into 3 lane - then merge back into 2 lanes and down onto the m50 - I really though I was right and so did all the cars in front and behind me - but just need to be sure. Thanks.

Not too sure what exactly your query is but here is some info that might be of use.
The general rule for roundabouts is:

    * If your approaching a roundabout (consisting of three exits) and you wish leave at the first exit, stay on the left.
    * If your on a roundabout and you wish to leave on the next second exit, stay on the left.
    * If you wish to eventually take the third exit, you are supposed to take the inner road (the right one going around the roundabout) and stay on it till you reach the third exit. Approaching it, indicate and when possible, cross over to it.

I hope that makes sense in what I'm trying to explain. Safe travelling.

Depends if the third exit is after the 12 o'clock position do you use the inside lane of the roundabout. BUT you always obey the markings on the road as they overrule the normal rules of the road.

Only in a 4 exit roundabout where the second junction is 12 oclock or before and the third exit is after 12 oclock.

I would say you need to be in the middle lane at the lights as the left lane goes left, & the middle can go left or straight on becoming the left lane after the first turn, so if you decide to go straight from the left your potentially cutting across anyone turning left from the middle lane.

EDIT@ actually the more i look at it you should be in the very right lane at the lights cos the left & middle lanes are both for going left, you can see you can naturally move into the left most lane after the first left after the lights from what starts out as the right most lane. The left & middle lanes are marked with left arrows before the lights.

If at the above junction left for left (Sandyford Ind Est), straight for straight (M50 Southbound) and right for right (Sandyford Village / Stepaside).

    Couldn't be more simple! ;)

    I would disagree:

Left & middle for turning left. Right lane seperates into 3 lanes after the left.

That was before they put in the slip road for turning left before the roundabout.

    True.

    As above, true.
I was using a basic roundabout as a guideline.
I've seen some ill informed drivers just constantly sticking to the outer ring all the way around no matter what furthest exit they are taking, sometimes causing accidents.

Actually, thinking about this particular roundabout it can be kinda messy. Approaching from this angle one should take the slip road to turn left towards Sandyford Industrial Estate. At the lights if you're in the left lane and intend going straight ahead (M50 Southbound) you should remain in the left lane once you pass the first exit. As there are three lanes on the roundabout you can also be in the right lane at the junction and head M50 Southbound via the middle lane or move into the right lane to turn towards Stepaside.

If the OP intends to head M50 Southbound from this junction he has the option of picking the left lane and stay left once passing the first exit OR choosing the right lane and stay in the middle lane once passing the first exit. He should not pick the left lane and move in to the middle lane.

thats the right junction alright but the road has changed...there is only 2 lanes coming up to the lights, then splits into 3 lane after the lights..

think I understand it more now....I just need to stay in the left lane to allow the right lane to go into the middle or stay on the outer right lane...thanks :)
