The country is full of musical societies but are there any out there that would gamble on a new Irish musical? If someone has written a musical would they need to set up their own society to get it performed?

The biggest obstacle is cost. To put on an amateur show you are talking at a cost of anything between €20k-150k  And yes I do mean €150,000!!

With massive outlays like that, and particularly in the current climate, you will notice a return to gingham and classics, things guaranteed to put bums on seats. I don't know of any group that could afford to take a risk on a totally new show from an unknown writer.

Now there are some groups who historically have been braver with their show choices Ballinrobe in Mayo and Rush in North Dublin are two that come to mind, but in these times even they are being more cautious.

If you really want to stage it then self funding is the way to go and that's difficult because you will want to do it on a budget but also you need to do it well if you want it to make a good impression.
