Desperate plea: Bike box

I had booked a bike box with a company I wont name, for the last weekend in July. The supply of this box is now looking doubtful, so Im posting here as a desperate attempt to find someone who is willing to hire, loan, sell or otherwise allow me to have a bike box before the 22nd July, until the 26th. If its a loaner, I would take care of it like it was my own.

I know its a long shot. But I dont have many options this close to the event.

You can have mine for these days. It's this one: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-elsted-bike-box/
If you break it you pay it :) I am in South Dublin.

Wow. That was fast. :) If I break it you get a new one! Would it fit things like shoes and a wetsuit as well?

    Really appreciate the offer.

Oh my.. I am lending my box to a triathlete, i am going to be forever cursed :p

If your bike is size > large then it will just fit the bike, but you ll have space around to put small stuff. The problem is the weight as the bag itself is 12-13kgs.

I was never going to make aerlingus weight restriction anyway (15kg). Im told 'they never weight them' but will have the cc ready just in case.

My bike is a 50 compact cf frame. And sorry about the curse. I promise not to contaminate it with tri-germs. ;)

In that case you'll fit everything in fine, and have space for a few extra bits and pieces, so you should be fine.

I don't think you can help infecting it -you bloody try-athletes get everywhere :)

I have got that dhb box up to 40kg packed full of stuff! Back in the good days before weight restrictions you could really take the píss with a bike box.

It is near impossible to cycle through Tibet, particularly from the Nepal side, so I flew to Hong Kong- as I need to get a new passport and that was the nearest Irish consulate. I get the train back to Chengdu in Sichuan on Saturday (44 hours) and start again near the border with Tibet, basically just skipping over Tibet but cycling down south through the Tibetan regions just east of the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) border which are Tibetan people but unrestricted by the central government. Road goes up to 5,000m! I meet some local cyclists here in Hong Kong, which is a very impresive city, alll the more so as I have spent the bulk of the last year in quite undeveloped countries. Shockingly expensive though (meaning, it ranges from a fifth of Dublin prices to half of Dublin prices :) I was spoiled by the standard five-course meal in Nepal for 50 cents.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Chengdu, I can wholeheartedly recommend Sims cosy guesthouse. Lovely lovely family, great hostel and fab food too.

Politics most likely. Rather red tape.

If you come across this lot in China, stop and say hello. One of my colleagues is on that trip...

As Ken says, it is politics. You have to get a special travel permit and special visa to enter Tibet which is separate from the normal Chinese visa, and it is restrictive- you must travel on a guided tour (although you can be the only person on the tour), you only get 14 days max in Tibet, and most importantly, once you exit Tibet you have to leave China within 7 days. China is a big country and frankly that just isn't long enough to get to the Vietnamese border (never mind that I need to apply for my Vietnamese visa in Kunming.) It is easier to do it the other way- you still need the guide but it is cheaper than arranging it in Kathmandu, and exiting within the time period allowed is not such a problem if you are going directly from Tibet into Nepal, e.g. you only have to cross Tibet in the restrictive time period, not Tibet and the rest of China.

It is possible to do it illegally from China (I met someone in Kathmandu who had just done so); you just dodge the police checkpoints into and in Tibet and if you are caught you play dumb and it is a slap on the wrist. Doing it illegally from Nepal would involve dodging an actual international border entering China itself illegally and is likely to be taken a lot more seriously.

@Ken- thanks for the advice on the hostel, I will check it out!
