Mac Book Pro Lagging/Stalling/Delayed Actions

So i've had my laptop now for over two years and lately i've noticed that it seems to be slowing down. The battery is certainly not how it was, but i don't mind that too much. What is becoming frustrating is that there seems to be a delay with everything i do on it e.g. when i type it takes a couple of seconds for it to appear on the screen, scrolling down pages it stops and then moves down and the most annoying, when watching youtube, movies etc the picture freezes every couple of seconds (sound is fine and there's no delay, it just catches up after it de-freezes!)

has anyone experienced this? any tips on how i can fix it or am i doomed!? i'm not really sure what the problem is which is the frustrating part.

Are applications slow to open? Is it slow to boot up? Run Disk Utility and verify the disk and repair permissions. When verifying the disk take note of any errors.

Open Activity Monitor, click on the CPU column (so that the highest CPU users are listed first) and see if there's any rogue processes hogging the CPU. The iStat Pro widget is good for checking this as well.

Thanks - i did what you did and it remedied some issues and did that twice and then gave me the all clear. I checked the CPU as well and there was nothing suspicious.

It did seem to help as it's not as glitchy, but it still freezes when watching videos if i've been on the laptop for a while (over an hour). Is there any thing else that you would recommend doing that might help?

    Thanks again - much appreciated

When you say it freezes when watching video, does the whole computer freeze? Does this happen with all video or just Flash video, etc?

How do you connect to the internet ? Sounds like an issue I had using a USB 3G stick. The software all but bring my MBP to a standstill after about 30 minutes !! Re-booting fixes it for another 30 minutes till it becomes unbearable again !!

@sadprofessor - the video pauses for a second and then resumes. i don't think it's just the flash as it happened when i watched a film on itunes. it freezes when it feels like the whole laptop is lagging, again - delay when typing, scrolling down a page doesn't move as fast as it used to or it stops mid way, moving the arrow to click on things - i would have the arrow on the button and the button wouldn't be available to click on immediately, it takes a couple of seconds for the laptop to register that i want to click that button.

i'm sorry - it's quite difficult to explain!

@zener i'm using wi-fi most of the time from BBnet
